1871 Italy 5 lira questions(added photos)

I took this as part of a trade and have a couple questions as to grade and authenticity

In the Krause it says the weight of these was 25 grams this one is just a touch under 24 ( 23.87 ) was there variences or is this suspect? the other question is concerning the grade ,there is a substancial difference between unc and BU so I figure I'll defer to an expert for an opinion... thanks for any help

More than a gram off on an UNC coin would set off red flags to me...

    Looks awfully shiny.

And it's a type that almost certainly has been a target of Chinese counterfeiters before. They love crowns.

That being said, I dunno, and if it turns out to be real, hey- nice coin.

The 8 in the date looks funky to me. Lettering is often a cue to Chinese fakes- they don't always get it just-so. I can't really tell on the rest of the lettering with this one, from the pictures. And for all I know, there could have been a funky looking "8" punch used by the Italian mint.

But it certainly bears further scrutiny.

    1. One gram light on a new coin is not promising.
    2. Looks polished (obverse in particular).
    3. Mushy "D'ITALIA" on reverse is not a confidence builder.

Could be wrong, but based on what I can see here, I wouldn't risk my money on this one if it was offered to me.

I overlooked that in my initial look at the pictures.

Are the A's in ITALIA really filled like that? Blobby looking? That's worrisome, if so.

  • It seems that you have a fake. It's under weight and the obverse and reverse lettering look wrong. Still at least it's only the Milan mint and not the Rome mint.

I should also add that it's almost certainly not silver.
