A handful of new star/HOFer variatons I recently discovered

1990 Upper Deck Cal Ripken Jr.

image

Cal's position has been moved from low in the box to a centered orientation in suit with the rest of the set. The guy who recently opened several case of 1990 UD high # in search of the Mike Witt card (and found and graded a copy getting a 10) also discovered that several of the high # subjects can be found with shifted positions on front. After pouring over 30 copies of Cal's card, I noticed the distinct change.

1990 Upper Deck Ozzie Smith

image

Ozzie's card uses two different fonts/sizes for his position (also noticed that all copies appear to have that magenta dot in the corner). I only found the one copy with the shorter, fatter font out of my 7 copies.

1990 Fleer Kirby Puckett / Bo Jackson

image

A diagonal black line through the photo and border can be found on some copies. I'm not sure why I had so many of this card, but in 37 copies, I only found two.

1989 Fleer Puckett/Davis

image

This actually popped out of an "error" box that held the Ripken FF and Randy Marlboro (red tint). Three little red curved lines above the Fleer logo. Checked the other ten copies I had and this was the only one.

Always interesting. That Witt in a PSA 10 is a huge hit. Wow.

Yeah, he's had it up on eBay for a while now. He opened a ridiculous amount of that product and poured over the hundreds of thousands of cards to find the new varieties that he did, I'm glad his efforts/money yielded something like that.

I didn't mean to insinuate there was one...just sharing new info with interested board members.

Is there a link somewhere with pics of what you mention here about the varieties he found?

I guess what I meant, and did a terrible job of getting across, is:
While these cards are "different" is there any value or possible collector demand for? They dont seem like errors just little inconsistencies in the printing process.

He has an auction up right now (maybe just ended) that shows the majority of them and lists each that he found.

You can find the updated "Ongoing Checklist" on my blog:

I'd say yes to player demand, how much, I'm not sure but I may list them at some point to find out. As a player collector myself, I enjoy all types of errors, printing laws, even coloring aberrations and I share new information with dozen of others who seem to agree that this kind of stuff is a welcome addition to their collections.

The Upper Deck findings are not the result of a simple black plate shift or printing inconsistency, but rather a change (minor, perhaps) that was made to the design/plate. After seeing several other subjects affected similarly, I think they are legitimate variations. The 1990 Fleer card definitely had an intentional change to it as a portion of the cards were printed with a piece of debris or object that wasn't part of the intended design which was changed. This is a little more arguable than the Upper Deck stuff, but several similar types of variations are accepted as "legit" within other sets such as 1990 Pro Set and 1990 Donruss, so I do believe this one qualifies. The 1989 card was interesting because there's seemingly no minor flaw too small for Fleer not to airbrush or correct as evidenced by the growing list of variations accepted-by-collectors.
