Reading about the coin dealer who was robbed by a smash-and-grab job, how much of a market do you think there would be for a fitted safe or locked strongbox in a full/part-time dealer's vehicle? Seems like the most robberies are when the dealers leave their vehicles for a few minutes who were followed by robbers waiting on them to be seperated from their cargo long enough to grab whatever's not bolted down.

I think it's because when they leave their cards they put the sheet with chairs on top over it!!! image

    Sorry....
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • I would guess that the market for such an option would be very small. And if a thief really wanted to rob a dealer badly enough, wouldn't they just steal the whole car, safe and all?

They would steal the entire car instead. They'd have the loot and escape transportation.

Install a kill switch in the car, too.

Then they at least have to tow the car.

The one glaring problem I see with this is it will work once or twice. Then the thieves will know they need you to open it. So either the steal the car or you will held up at gun point and forced to open it.

Personally I would rather not ever have a gun pointed at me.

Might not be a bad idea, but keep in mind some folks are too "thrifty" and the main problem I see is they would have to actually put their stuff in the safe. image

A lot of coin insurance policies do NOT cover a loss from an unattended vehicle, period. That would be a deal killer for me.

I know they have custom strongboxes for pro photographers, as a saw a blog about one in a pick up bed, with large solid steel slide out drawers, and multiple levels of other security.

the blog seems gone, but not the photo gallery
  • I would imagine it to be lucrative.
The coin dealers would be a secondary market.
    Primary market is drug dealers.
All kidding and jokes aside, local drug dealers in my area have these. The cops are pretty good at busting them as well.
They're averaging 1 firearm per 3 search warrants.
That's pretty high considering most are non-registered and modified and illegal.
And don't even mention pot, it's California, they don't look for it, it just pops up lol
But seriously it would be a good business as long as you didn't ask too many questions.

There's a market for hiring one of the boys in blue to moonlight and ride along on his weekend off.

An IED would make for some rather expensive shrapnel if the coins you're tryin' to protect are still in the trunk!

I think its a good idea, these are largely "smash and grab" type thefts. Perps are more likely to carry a prybar than a gun--------BigE

Having once stumbled upon a bank robbery, I can tell you that it's not a pleasant feeling.

I had a similar experience. The bank robber practically knocked me down while fleeing from the bank and he dropped his cell phone in the parking lot. I waited for the police and showed them where he dropped his cell phone. Not sure if he was ever caught though.
