Grade opinion please..1891-O 25c newp..update PCGS VF25

A light scratch on the shield and to the left of Liberty's head will probably keep this from grading, but looking at grades from Heritage I'm thinking most likely VF20, outside shot at VF30 and definitely not a Fine or XF.

Your opinions would help.....

It's possible it will grade. Those look like somewhat older scratches, but who knows these days!

As for grade, I think a VF-25 (at least in details) is not outside the realm of reality!

25 details, but maybe net to 20 if the scratches are bad.

VF25, the scratch along with what appears to be a cleaning will likely put it into a genuine details holder.

I would buy it if the price was fair, they are tougher than you might think.

The grade is VF25-30 with some minor problems, not a bad coin at all if the price is right.

Net value of VF20-25 imo. Details 25 to 30. I actually think it would grade out VF "something." The scratches and old light cleaning are not that bad. Compared
to many how other key date O and S mints I see in Fine-XF holders, this one is at least on par with most of those. In particular I recall seeing a holdered VF25 72-s
quarter that had essentially burnt/black surfaces along with a more severe scratch across the eagle. I didn't even buy the coin because I didn't feel it belonged in a
holder since it appeared corroded. This 91-0 is not problem free, but neither are 75% of the circ key dates in graded holders. A very presentable coin with traces of luster
left. Probably in top 20-35% of all remaining VF coins.

As to the old scratches, I'm not sure it would grade or not, but I think it has a shot, anyway.

Put me down as guessing VF25, shot 30, with maybe 40-50% odds at grading, depending on the apparent severity of that one major hairline in hand.

VF-35. The 1891-O quarters were not struck very well thus wore quickly especially on the reverse. Most 1891-O's are very worn. Too bad for the scratches on the obverse, but even with the scratches that is a very nice coin for an 1891-O.

    VF-30 details, net VF-20 IMO.

That is a nice 1891-O. I have to say solidly VF30 details, and I'd hate to call it "cleaned." At worst, it looks like it got a soap-and-water rinse. The scratch is just unfortunate, and it keeps it from being a high-dollar coin. I think it just misses being gradable. Still a heck of a coin!

As roadrunner stated, I would send it in for grading once. I have seen much worse in holders.

VF30. As others have said, it's probably worth a shot for grading. The coin's not 100% perfect, but there's a lot worse in holders out there.

There is a lot better in Gen Holders too
  • VF details - cleaned.

After reading all the great responses, you've convinced me I should send it in for grading.

  • Tough coin, I seen more lately than I've seen for a long time.CRO had one a while back and HLRC had 2 I think.

Good job on that. I wonder if the small scratch is still a reason for someone not to buy the piece? I would not be surprised if it sells at a slight discount because of the scratch, but it's a lot better off now that it's in PCGS plastic!

    Nice coin,

It will grade, mark it down. It grades 25 maybe 30 but likely 25. Oops, just realized it was an old post with an update. Not a bad guess huh!

Good job DE59. The coin was netted down a bit for the scratch. Regardless, still a very desireable coin that is rarely found problem free in any grade except Fair to VG.
I think one has to expect a light scratch like that, or some minor planchet issue on most every key date seated quarter.
