How many Whitman titles (new and old) or other coin books will be available for the Kindle?

Longacre cannot believe he is writing these words. I gaze lovingly at my burled walnut stacks, as I sink deep into my overstuffed chair in my library, sipping a very expensive Scotch. Although he views himself as a bastion of the printed word, Longacre knows that this is the 21st century, and one cannot stop progress. I may request my secretary to submit an order for one of those Kindle things. I weep as I write this.

Does anyone know how many of the new and old Whitman titles are available on the Kindle? I assume that shipping the Kindle versions of the books should be just as easy on the Chinese junks as the hard copies of the titles. What about the books from other coin publishers?

I figure that although a Korean-made plastic Kindle does not look as impressive on the bookshelf, it could spare me some pain with lugging around a heavy book. For example, in my recent visit to Brazil, I took along the paper copy of From Colony to Superpower (which is excellent by the way), and other than impressing the chippie sitting next to me who seemed very interested in the topic, hauling around the 1,056 pages got to be a little too much.

I do not have the answer you are looking for, but I am interested in the answer as well since I've decided to pull the trigger on a Kindle in the next few weeks. Thank you also for the book recommendation - I've added it to my wish list image

I don't think there there but I only looked once as mine came with about fifteen books already loaded of the the Mystery yearn that I enjoy as pre sleep fare.

Ah but on further delving into the subject we find that they are there. Kindle Store. Using search as "whitman books coins"

BTW just ordered the new er version of the Red Book for mine. image

IIRC, they made an announcement to put a good portion of the Whitman catalog onto electronic readers. No doubt Dentuck will be along soon to illuminate us.

I enjoy reading books on Kindle (have been doing so for about 2 years now), but I must say that I do not care much for using the Kindle (or iBooks, Nook, etc.) for reference books. I downloaded the Redbook sample and did not like it. It is currently a lot clunkier to flip through an ebook and find what you are seeking than it is a physical book. I have found the same problem to be the case for travel books. This might change with improving technology, especially if they incorporate voice recognition (ie. "Find large cents").

If I am actually reading a book from cover to cover, I much prefer the convenience and feel of the ebook.

For reference books it would be better to use the Kindle "cloud reader" on your laptop for reference books. Bigger screen, color, no need to buy anything (other than the book), as long as you have a laptop.

Cloud reader works on Chrome as an App.

You can also get a dedicated kindle reading app for your laptop independent of the browser.

I guess I'm not the only one who uses "Whitman" and "Chinese junk" in the same paragraph. image

Thanks I like that much better than just on the small screen for the Red Book..

I tried to post this subject on a recent thread, but I think it looked too much like spam.

If you go to www.archive.org and search coins, american coins, etc in the text section it will give you a listing of ebooks most of which you can download in Kindle format.

    This is a sample

Granted these books are old, but the selection is vast if you enter the correct keywords

I've also been considering the new Amazon tablet - full color access to Kindle titles might be a better alternative for reference books. I suppose the IPad can do the same if you prefer Apple products.
