After years of lousy pro football, the SF Bay Area may have two teams in the playoffs this year.

Both the 49rs and the Raiders have done well so far. By the mid way point of the season the 49rs may be 7-1 and the Raiders 6-2.

Long suffering fans of both teams are starting to believe that the NFL playoffs may return to the Bay Area this year.

Now if only both teams could get a new stadium built (even if they have to share it) so they can move out of Candlestick and the Colesium, both of which are very long in the tooth.

For the Raiders, Jason Campbell is almost certainly out for the rest of the year with a broken collarbone. That is a major damper on an otherwise remarkable turnaround year for the team. Personally I see them fading a bit between now and the rest of the season although this year so far has been a great shot in the arm for the Raider Nation.

After yesterday's win against the Lions the Niners look like they're for real. As long as players stay healthy and the rest of the NFC West stays mediocre, they can have the division clinched by Thanksgiving. Isn't it incredible how much difference a coach makes?

Tom Cable and Mike Singletary are not likely to hang out together and socialize, but one thing they do have in common is that neither one had significant success as a head coach in the NFL.

Hugh Jackson and Jim Harbaugh both seem, so far this year, to have energized the players on both teams and developed a different mind set/attitude in the players.

Will be interesting to see how the Raider organization and team adapts to the passing of Al Davis. Without his iron grip on the team, things will no doubt be different.

My favorite team (Denver) is in the dumper again this year. Since I live in No. Cal. it is nice to see the local teams having a good year.

I think Tom Cable did just fine. He got fired after an 8-8 record with a team that has sucked for years. This is similar to Sam Wyche building a team in Tampa that was finally starting to show potential then getting fired and Tony Dungy gets the credit for turning the team around. Actually, Dungy got a similar deal in Indy with the Colts, although Mora had probably worn out his welcome there. And Gruden won a Super Bowl with a team that Wyche and Dungy had put together. The same kind of deal. I think had Cable stayed, the Raiders would be about the same as they are now.

A problem with Cable was that he did not appear to be in favor with Al Davis. Further his legal troubles [including the altercation with an assistant coach] were a distraction.

You may be correct that if Cable had stayed on as coach the Raiders may be in the same position that they are in today. Unfortunately for Cable, Al Davis decided to cut him loose and go in another direction.
