I've been slowly working on this collection
and I was fortunate to have been the winning
bidder of this great looking coin:

Broadstruck, I spent some time examining it
at Heritage's lot viewing room and although it
really is a very choice AU coin it has a tad more
rub than a true AU 58; it was nice enough for the
grade with JA's company though. I'm very pleased
    with it.

Much more so than the coin I received from
a recent Internet Only auction of Heritage's, an 1838
Reeded Edge Half in an AU 53 PCGS holder.

I'm returning the 1838 RE Half to PCGS as I feel the
coin doesn't belong in a graded holder, just a Genuine.
This coin didn't show the large amount of hairlines on-line.

I'll have it with me in Baltimore - so - you'll see it there !

I like them both, but the 37 is definitely nicer.

    I don't see a problem with the 38 in a 53 holder. JMHO.image

Glad you got the 1837 buddy. I liked it too. Your '38 is nice as well just a tad too white for my taste but very meaty nonetheless.

    Glenn,

The 1838 looks like a 33 1/3 vinyl album with all the hairlines
    which HA's images didn't capture. The newp [ 1837 ] is a great
looking coin - and I'm glad I previewed it - as my not previewing
the 1838 was an expensive error - and - although the images don't
show the surfaces correctly - the coin going back to PCGS.

I forgot to take it with me to Pittsburgh because it was already
in the bank and I was pressed for time before my flight.

With your analyzes of the 1838 glad I dropped out of the bidding when I did. At least I think it was the same coin but I did not keep the info on the auction so not positive. That 1837 is a beauty and the rarest of the group by a mile.

That is truly lovely Half. A very nice pick up indeed.image

There is just something about the overall surface and

appearance of the coin, that I find most attractive.

Also the 1837 in MS-68 is a real WOWSER. Nicely done on both coins.
