From whomever you got it, get your money back... neither signature is legit.

I'm not a handwriting/autograph expert, but I disagree; I've done at least six signings with Jerry and had Joe sign in my store, and these look good to me. You definitely have one of the best Montana signatures, as he rarely takes the time to put that much effort into his last name.

the helmet came with a certificate of authenticity and it shows a picture of them signing it. Both signatures are real

    No

I want a Marino piece tho...

  • Those signatures are no good and that company does a lot of forging. I have asked them many questions by email regarding authenticity and they never answer them.

Those pictures they have of athletes signing are crap. They once used a photo from a signing that someone else did and when confronted, they pulled all listings for that player and never listed them again.

They have been listing Tom Brady autographs for years, never ending supply. Same with Montana, Manning, all the big names. Just go through their feedback and look at all the Montanas they have sold and the price they get most of the time.

Send that helmet to PSA/DNA and I am sure it fails.

Allow me to ellaborate with most of the inconsistencies (I too have done multiple signings with each)...

Jerry Rice - Top of "J" almost always touchs and is usually sloped at both ends of the top bar, Bottom of "J" is generally signed in a left-right motion whereas this clearly appears to be right-left to make a best match (forgery dead giveaway), the "e" in Jerry is generally signed in a from the top down and loop around stroke whereas this appears to be bottom up and loop, the start of "R" in rice is generally a down-up double stroke leading right into the finishing of the "R" whereas this appears to be a single stroke, broken, and finished, the "e" in Rice is rarely, if ever, closed, the "#" is all wrong as it generally has jutted top down strokes on the vertical lines and a concave bottom bar wheras this are straight strokes vertical and a convex bottom bar, finally, the "0" in 80 is larger and more pronounced then normal

Joe Montana - Rarely (and I haven't seen such in 10+ years) does he sign anything resembling a complete "Joe", lest the "Jim" we see here, the "J" in Joe is also way off as the bottom loop is never larger than the top loop and this one is way off proportion-wise, the "M" in Montana never has the second hump larger than the first and while it varies from signing to signing it's almost always consistently sized humps or the first hump is noticably larger unlike this example, finally and only because it's hard to criticize his odd writing of his last name, he never jumps back to an upward stroke off the big "M" whether he gives a long or short last name signature as it almost always flows into the big loop with varying lengths of scribble in between until the finish.

But, I thought they took a picture of every helmet they signed, then gave you the picture of the helmet YOU bought? Man...do I ever feel like I got ripped off. Schucks.

I'm not a Montana expert but I didn't like the Rice when I saw it. You should send to PSA and make sure you can get money back if they reject.
  • Sadly, as I was reading this thread, I was thinking to myself when I saw the helmet that it was the work of those forgers. Then I get down to the "pic" of them signing. This seller is IMO one of the biggest crooks on ebay and needs to be in jail. I have been watching them for awhile now. Send them a link to this thread and see what they say. Tell them you are sending it to PSA/DNA and see what they say about a refund should or when it doesn't pass.

I'm sorry you have bought this junk. These people need to be stopped. They are as bad as the Roaches Corner.
  • this is the ebay seller who sold it to me

i bought it over a year ago. i'm not sure what to do

  • Just to clarify,
the seller you bought it from is not the one I am accusing of being the forger. I personally know nothing about that seller. They must have bought it from gridironlegends. gridironlegends are the ones that I believe to be crooks. That is their bogus COA that they give out.

Maybe someone else can give you some advice as to what to do, I just don't know. I would love for these guys to be shut down as they are crooks!
Maybe try calling gridironlegends since it originated from them. My guess is they will not help you though. Sadly, many people think they are a legit company and they are not!

I have been watching their auctions and they just have a never ending supply of that stuff which only means one thing! Do you mind if I ask what you paid for it? If you would rather not, I understand. Sorry this has happpened to you. I have been where you are and it's one of the reasons I started to do my own research on autographs and feel I am pretty knowledgeable.

This company also uses another user name. I think it is gridiron_authentics or something like that.
  • ok, I was just looking at the seller's feedback you bought from and he has purchases from Member id gridironauthentics_direct . That is the other user name on ebay the crooks use. The seller you bought from most likely is just innocent in all this just like you. He bought from them thinking it is real.
  • your seller has made 13 purchases in the last year and a half from either Member id gridironauthentics_direct or gridironlegends. At the very least I would contact him and let him know what is going on.

  • Consider it a lesson learned. Not much you can do after all that time has passed.

Allow me to say this, only because you're a new member. I always like to assume people are honest but this is the real world we live in. I would highly recommend you don't now go try to sell that item on eBay. Members of this forum have an uncanny way of finding stuff like that when it happens and reporting it to eBay etc. It really stinks to have to eat that cost, I know, but that's what you have to do. Replacing the item will probably be a $220 venture if you look at Joe and Jerry's show prices plus the actual helmet. People in this hobby have had to learn far more expensive lessons in the past.

Yea, someone on another forum had questioned an item they bought from the same people and was going to send it to PSA/DNA and update the results. I asked what the results were and he said he decided to just sell it for $50. Very disappointing that someone would do that. Especially for $50. I think his was a Joe Montana mini.

Unfortunately I have seen many people selling this garbage on the secondary market. They buy from the forgers thinking it is real and then resell.

At least the helmet by itself is worth something, right?
  • I dont want to sell this on ebay. If anything i'll just give it to a friend or sell it to a friend who wants it even tho the signatures are fake

    i appreciate the help

    god bless
