PCGS Pricing Premium

In general, for common date issues, approximately what percentage premium will a holdered and PCGS-graded coin have over a RAW coin of the same grade?

In general, for common date issues, approximately what percentage premium will a holdered and PCGS-graded coin have over a NGC-graded coin of the same grade?

I realize that there are always exceptions (especially for non-common date issues), but I'm looking for a consensus of opinion(s) for the common date issues.

Thanks!

There are no general rules that apply here or that would be of any practical use.

Agree with the above. There is no specific % that you can add to a raw coin to determine the PCGS slabbed coin value. In some cases a raw coin can sell for more than when slabbed. I've seen PCGS AU58 superslidder coins cracked out and sold raw as MS63 or higher.

We talked about this in great depth in the Seated quarter section of the Seated forum (www.seated.org). I dont know if you have seen it there but Ill bump it for you if you like.

From what I think I see. Buffalo nickels routinely go over the rate sheets. It also seems if I want a coin it goes too high, and if I don't want a coin it goes too low. image

Key point is a PCGS slabbed coin has an identified grade which most buyers and sellers accept as accurate. A RAW coin has only a PERCEIVED grade which buyers and sellers may agree or disagree about. So there is most likely a premium attached to the PCGS graded coin. The problem is trying to determine what % premium that is and that, of course, comes back to the preceived grade of the RAW coin. Steveimage
  • Best to go with real world offers, real world auction results for answers.

For example, take a raw MS65 Morgan common date, walk it around a show and try to sell it. To average results out more, say there are 20 coins to be sold. For the raw coins, 45% of MS65 greysheet bid might be a generous offer. Now put the same coins in new or old ANACS holders, and that offer will likely bump up, and get another significant bump up again for NGC holders, and maybe a smidge more for PCGS depending on the dealer. Take another example, a VF common date Bust half. There may not be much percentage difference between dealer offers on raw, or certified in various holders for a VF Bust half.

Take a third example, trying to sell online on Ebay. Raw coins are going to be discounted because 80% or more of raw sellers on that venue routinely overgrade or overlook problems, so buyers learn that the grades are optimistic or the coins are likely to have problems and bid accordingly. The discount will vary, again, a VF Bust half is going to suffer less of a discount from being raw than a MS65 Morgan. One reason is because one grade up or down isn't as big a difference in price.

For the differences between similar coins in different holders, look up the auction archives. In a few series at certain grades there is a wide gap between services, in some there is a modest gap, and in some areas the gap is hard to see. Best search the archives for the coins a person is interested in buying or selling.

These are tough questions, for sure.

Thanks for all of the insight so far... much appreciated!

For me, I only buy PCGS holdered coins, saves me the trouble of submitting them to PCGS. Don't even look at raw coins these days.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
