What's new out there in Jefferson Nickel land?

BigDowgieBigDowgie Posts: 1,774 ✭✭✭✭
It's been a little slow on the Forum with the series. Is this telling me something?

If you haven't noticed, the Corso Complete Variety Set added a MS63 1963 TDR (FS-37.3), population of only 2 now! I find it quite hard to believe there have only been 2 of these found or at least sent into PCGS. I'm not sure what exist with NGC or ANACS.

A few of the other Cherry Pickers varieites are equally baffling. These shouldn't be that tough!
1941-D/D RPM#3 (FS-501) Total pop of 1
1941-S/S RPM#2 (FS-502) Total pop of 2
1968-S/S RPM#2 (FS-501) Total pop of 1

Oh yes, where the heck is that 1942 T1 DDO (FS-25) MS64FS? Only the second FS coin for this variety! I want it!

What else is going on?

  • I heard some dingleberry got a rare die variety from a PCGS AU-58 into a NGC 64FS or vice versa, you hear about that?

The only way I would believe that story is if you heard it from me!

I did hear a story that another Jefferosn collector (I wish it was me) purchased a 1945-P NGC MS66FS for the going regular price and guess what........DDR (FS-30.0). Waiting to see if it becomes the PCGS Top Pop, if it crosses.

Absolutely nothing new for me. image
The last upgrade to my set (1938-64 non-FS) was a PCGS-67 1950-D back in March 2009.

There's been 1 or 2 coins floating around out there that would help, but the sellers are asking the equivalent of a house payment. No thanks.
    When in doubt, don't.

I will be taking SDB inventory this week, as well as showing off a few hundred SEGS slabs with some tastey
Jeffery morsals. My girls 13 year old son has taken to Jeffs like flys on, well u know so I want to show him
exactly why they were bought and why you do not see many on the market anymore.

BD as far as pining over Franks variety set, I gave up on trying to be him a long time ago, there is no
matching his deep pockets, Im just happy to have a few of his throwbacks image

I will be liquidating some Jefferson sets, mainly the 94 and 97 Botanical. Over the years
I bought about 20-25 each of them-so from now till xmas you will be seeing a few here
and there dispearsed on the BST

    pontiacinf,
Bring out pics of some of those "SEGS tastey Jeffery morsals". I've never tried keeping up with Corso and Strom, just feels kind of nice just sitting in the top row of the ballpark these guys are playing in.

    Bring'em on!

It looks like Jeffersons have been quiet on all the sites recently. These will be among the
first to explode out of the gate when the economy finally improves though. There are sim-
ply millions of new collectors and they become more sophisticated every day. Indeed, there
may well be some action even before the economy improves.

The FSNC (Full Step Nickel Club) is haviing their 9th auction which closes Oct 29th and it ap-
pears to be very well represented by older Jeffersons in high grade. The club is back to four
newsletters (The Portico) after only two last year and are continuing the review of the old
PAK newslatters from back in the late-'70's/ early-'80's. I missed some of these so it's very
    interesting for me.

I continue to stash really nice Jeffersons when I see them but they are tough. Most of them
have multiple problems and finding two sided gems is rare. Two sided gems with full steps
are far far more difficult. It's a fun series and one anyone can collect from pocket change at
    very little cost.

    cladking,

I've been meaning to look into the FSNC for a long, long time. I have all the old PAK auction lists and new letters. I have not pulled these out in over 20 years. Wow, how time flies. After the PAK, I spent years with Ramapaugh Trading Co (Sue and Rich Sisti) picking up some nice Jeffersons.

I'll PM you for info on FSNC.

I sold my 1942-D over Horizontal D MS64 PCGS in the Pittsburgh Auction last week. Here is a farewell photo.

I liked the rarity of the variety, but in the end, it just wasn't as pretty as my less rare high grade Jeffs.

    LeHigh96,

    Wow!!

It's a beautiful coin and is pretty nice even compared to the regular variety. It's hard
to imagine there are (m)any nicer.

I've been buying a stray nickel here and there.

Just got my camera hooked back up tonight so here is one I've picked up in the last three months while my gear was in storage.

Congrats on your sale! I think you would have done better had they used your pictures. This is one of my greatest fears about these auction houses, their inability of producing accurate pictures for whoever sells through them.

    For a second I thought a 1958-D but a nicely toned 1938-D, very nice.

I auctioned about $40K worth of coins in the sale and requested oversized photos for many of the lots since they were toned coins. In most cases, I believe my photos were far superior to those taken by Heritage. I also believe that there was a direct correlation to the quality of the photos and the sell through rate of my toned coins with reserves. Some of their photos were excellent, and others were dog doo.

Personally, I wish they would allow ALL consignors to use private photographers as long as the photographers in question were pre-approved by Heritage. I know for a fact that if Todd had photographed my coins, they would have realized substantially higher prices.

I wish I could say that I am going to have fun with the money, but the truth is that I am way overextended in rare coins and am selling some of my collection in an effort to build a more diversified portfolio.

Another note: I am still having a ridiculously hard time finding good looking, high grade 38-42 proofs.

  • BaronVonBaughBaronVonBaugh Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭✭
I have been working on a Jefferson Proof set for some time. I am happy with the progress I have made, but
just getting into the top five sets has been tough. Finding the coins I need and having the money at the same
    time is usually the problem.

    1965 - Present

Finding the coins for this set can be a problem. I doubt that I will be able to get into the top five sets with it.

    1938 - Present

I plan to add photos to these eventually.

    BaronVonB,

Hey, take it easy on yourself! You have some great coins, just keep looking and working on it. Think about stepping into adding varieties to your collection. Varieties adds a little excitement to the hunt!

Enjoy, PCGS ranking sould be way down the list of priorities!

  • Still waiting for the JHF sale.
  • BigDowgieBigDowgie Posts: 1,774 ✭✭✭✭
    clackamas,

Ditto on the JHF set. Way back when, I owned that 1954-S. I never had pictures and would love to see it in that MS67FS holder!

I assume pictures are not allowed at Aution Viewings? If/when the set goes to Auction, I'm sure this will be one of the featured coins.
