My First Matte Proof Lincoln

So after a 6 month search high and low ... I FINALLY bought my first MPL. Give that man a cigar! Please take the photo with a grain of salt as I have not seen the coin in hand -- I took the various sellers photos and tried to guess-timate what a TrueView might look like -- however admittedly, at this point, this is a guess. I will be sure to post the TrueView when I get that. I think Phil at TrueView will be able to bring out a lot of really exquisite color in this one.

I'd love to see the Trueview of that beautiful MPL.

I love the hair and beard details of these proofs (and of course the color of this one!).

Here's a poor pic of a really awesome 1914 MPL in PCGS 66BN I sold earlier this year that looked way way better in hand:
Michael Kittle Rare Coins --- 1908-S Indian Head Cent Grading Set --- No. 1 1909 Mint Set --- Kittlecoins on Facebook --- Long Beach Table 448
I need to get me one of them some day...

At first I didnt think it was the same coin, but now i see those streaks on the reverse bottom match up perfectly. Wow, what a pop in that max color angle.
I would be very interested to hear a bit of the history of this in your collection if you are open to sharing that. Where you bought it and how much you paid ... also when and where you sold it and for how much. If you dont want to post that, could you PM me. I always like to keep track of a coins history. I know that monster colorful MPL's have dropped in price since the parabolic move in prices in 2006-2007.
I wonder why the current seller didnt post a more color picture as it's the color that really drives the prices of MPLs.
Here is all I know about it ...
This was up for auction on Heritage in July, the high bid was $2645 + 15% = $3,042, however there was a higher reserve on this coin so the sale was cancelled. Then this same coin when back up on auction on Heritage (Pittsburgh) last night, I decided I really wanted it, and I think there was at least 1 other really motivated buyer as the bids shot up from from the opening bid of $1,900 all the way to my high bid of $3,750 + 15% in about 15 seconds. I was hoping to get this in the low to mid $3000's but really wanted it and stretched a bit out of my comfort zone.
I have been looking for a colorful MPL for 6 months and I am quite happy with this one! I paid about $800 more than I wanted, but what's a few hundred dollars betwen friends?

WaterSport, No, no plans for the set of MPL's ... that 1909 VDB is a killer. I just wanted one as a type. Although who knows, if I see another pretty one, I might make a run for it.
I am still amazed at how much pop this coin had in the max color lighting angle.
A good example of how much lighting angles matter in photography.

You will see once you get the coin in hand that the color in my image is spot on. I did not shoot the coin at an angle or try to just capture color in my image, I just tried to show the coin as close to in hand as possible. Heritage did a terrible job imaging the coin but what can ya do I sent you a PM with more details about the history of the coin. The coin was purchased from Andy at Angel Dees roughly two years ago at the houston money show. There are only two dealers I will purchase matte proofs from and Andy is one of them.
Its said that a large number of 1914s remained untouched in the original mint tarnish proof ( ) tissue well into the 1950s....and a lot of 1914s show such tones, but not to the sweet degree your coin does. Nice too..that it dosent have a hazing, mine had a target pattern toning, but was difficult to view.
Its coins like this that still have the 'power' of the MPL.
(certainly not to pee on anyones party but am I the only one who thinks the spot on the O in ONE on the reverse has been 'worked on' )
Congrats on your purchase.
Imo it looks to me by the pic more rb than just bn.

<< <i>Here are some better images of your new matte proof. I owned that coin for roughly 2 years and it was always one of my fovorites. I feel the coin should 66 plus but thats just me
Are we sure that is the same coin? Yours does not have the die break on the edge of the rim at 2-3 oclock. All the photos of WL1957's 1914 do show the die break. At any rate, both really nice examples. Mel

Uh considering I was the consigner I am sure its the same coin.
If I did, this would be what I would seek.
