Can anyone identify the two men in this photo?

Hi,

This photo was taken during White Sox Spring Training in 1986. That all the information I have on the photo. Does anyone have any idea who the two men in the photo are?

Is the one on the left from the baseball Garcia family? Just a "gut shot" guess without any web searching.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

There is a 1986 Chicago White Sox spring training Program up for sale on ebay right now if you really need to know....believe it was $12 with a best offer option.
  • The other guy kinda looks like Paul Richards. Not sure if he was with the White Sox at that point.

    Collecting 1970 Topps baseball
  • It looks alot like Paul Richards, but I can't find anything on him being with the White Sox in 1986...I'm going to send the photo to Al Dark to autograph, and ask him if he knows who the other man is.

    Thanks,
    R-Mac

You might want to try posting it at baseball-fever.com. There's a pretty good chance that someone will know.

    Bill Burgess, in particular.

Hope Alvin doesn't send you back an unsigned note that reads "Take a hike, son."

If that's Paul Richards, it very well could be the last photo taken of him. According to his page at Baseball-reference.com, he died May 4, 1986 in Waxahatchie TX.

I also completely agree that Alvin Dark is the guy on the left.

How about Cot Deal? He was the White Sox assistant farm director in 1986.

Edit to add: I found an article from September 1986 that says Cot Deal was Alvin Dark's aide that year too.

  • I'm fairly certain it's Moe Drawbowsky.

In late 1985, Ken "Hawk" Harrelson took over as GM. Spring Training 1986 was a circus in Sox camp, as he brought in a bunch of his old buddies to work as special coaches. He wanted two pitching coaches (one for starters, one for relievers), two hitting coaches (one for power guys, one for average-type hitters), special assistant coaches.

Now I'm certain that it's Cot Deal. It looks almost exactly like him. Pretty sure it is. Thanks!
