How not to remove sticker residue from a PCGS slab

I was organizing some newps, and a few of the PCGS coins had stickers on them - prices, dealers codes, etc. One of them left behind a sticky mess that would not come off easily. I went to find my trusty bottle of Goo Gone - a great product for removing sticker residue, glue, etc.

I could not find it anywhere. I did find a bottle of Koinsolv - which I keep around for raw coins that need an acetone bath. At first, I went right past it, but the label caught my eye - "Removes Tape". I figured I'd give it a try.

An extra moments thought probably would have given me pause about this (it is a solvent), but I just grabbed a Q-tip, dipped it in the Koinsolv, and started to swap away the sticky stuff.

It removed the residue in under one second - I thought "Wow, this is great!". Another second, and something seemed to be going wrong - it looked like the residue was back worse than before. Another second, and I realized the Koinsolv was melting the PCGS holder instead of cleaning it!

It made a big, opaque, indentation right across the front of the slab where the PCGS coin number is. Ugh. It will need to get re-holdered now.

Just thought I'd share. - Anyone else ever done this?

  • Yeah, don't use plasticizers on plastic, like acetone.

Seriously, if you have access to ether based auto starting fluid (aerosol) and can be smart enough to use it in a well ventilated area, it works as well or better than alcohol or WD-40. Even a tiny burst of it on to a soft cloth, which then can be rubbed on the holder surface is very effective at removing stubborn sticker adhesive.

Yep. I've always used repeated thumbing, with a little bit of rubbing alcohol. Does the trick, usually.

Been scared of using some solvents for precisely that reason.

brasso works great for this. it won't damage the slab. rub some on, let it dry, then wipe it off. use a soft cloth.

PlastX and Slab Renew work well.
