Milestone giveaway. Congratulations Muygrandeoso!!!

Hi folks.

While doing some updates, I noticed that my NGC Custom Set 8 Reales Madness reached a pretty nice milestone - over 15,000 views in 3.5 years. Thank you all who added to the view count over the years! My goal is to give Zohar a run for his money in the upcoming registy awards for the best Darkside Signature Set and hopefully, with your help, tip the scales in my favor (evil laugh) while giving away some large crusty silver in the process.

Here's what I'm proposing...

I will select a random winner from all the replies that qualify for the draw and send him / her the following:

Nice scarce and crusty 1827 Guanajuato 8 Reales in an NGC XF40 plastic:

imageimage

And a 2-3 raw circulated (but most likely toned and with a high coolness factor) other 8 Reales coins of my choosing.

Here are 2 that I've picked to throw-in:

imageimage
imageimage

In order to qualify:

1. Check out my set ATS: 8 Reales Madness and a few examples of winning sets from previous years, like Zohar's Holy Roman Empire - House of Habsburg Talers., or Eagle1's The Challenger Collection - Mexican Gold, 50 Pesos , or a more recent winner - Dash Elezi's The Elezi Family Collection, or just look at my set with your own critical eye and provide at least 1 suggestion on what I can do to improve it.

Any suggestions are welcomed! You can comment on anything from the layout of the set itself, description, composition, order, theme, etc...

2. Post your suggestion in this thread.

BINGO! You're entered to win a nice chunk of colonial change image

I will use my trusty random number generator to select the winner on the 1st of November.

image Good Luck!!! image

And just to give you an example, I was thinking of expanding the description of the set to include a short history of each mint represented within the set itself. I noticed that the description field accepts some basic HTML, so I might even be able to add some images of the mints and have it nicely formatted.

So, if you're suffering from creative block and want an easy contest entry, you can just tell me what you think about this idea image

BTW - I really think the competition may come from Brent's set - German State Sede Vacante Talers and Medals

First I want to say that I think your set is really great. I've checked it out a few times before because you have very nice examples with nice photos which make it is very useful in comparing coins that I have found/bought. One tidbit of information that I think you could add to your set description is weight/diameter specs. While this information is available other places, finding a place for it in your set description might help beginners with authenticating their coins(while comparing them to yours!) Another thing that might be useful along the same lines: A mention of the books/reference guides you are using for attribution etc. You always here "Buy the book before the coin" and I think it would be your chance to point people in the right direction, and help grow the part of the hobby that you are obviously quite passionate about!

    P.S: Great give-away items, Thanks!

  • Great set and I think your idea for the mint descriptions would add an extra dimension to the set that could be the winning edge you need.

Thanks for the give away. I have been admiring your coins ATS for the year I have been a member over there.

Your collection starts with King Fernando the VI , he is the second of the Bourbon family (after a long ruling period of the Habsburgers)
I think it would be nice/logic to start your collection with at least one Mexico 8 reale of the first Bourbon ruler, namely King Philips the V (1700-1746)

Awesome set. I'd like to see a piece in there from 1800 because that was the year that Governor King of the Colony of New South Wales declared the Spanish dollar as legal tender in the fledgling colony and carrying a sterling value of 5 shillings image

Z, I noticed that the description field accepts HTML tags. I inserted the thumbnail images by using the following HTML code:

    <center>
    <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/romamart/image06181.gif" width="93" height="100"/>

Andres, thank you for the suggestion. I've been looking for a nice crusty example of Philip V for a while. Hoping to add one in a coming year.

I like the pictograph image in the Holy Roman Empire set which does a better job I think of providing some insight into the history of the set. I like your images but I think this is something you could do to better display the set right off the bat image

Haha, Zohar is a quick learner image

    Thank you for a suggestion!

P.S. Z, you should center the images. Just use the <center> tag before and </center> tag after the image tags.

<< <i>Make all the backgrounds the same color. I like black myself. >>

I was thinking about that, Don. After playing a bit with different backgrounds, I'm not convinced that black would work with dark crusty toners. I happen to have quite a few of those. Alternatively, I can make all images uniform size and have a custom background (but not completely black).
  • I would reccomend getting that awesome set professionaly photographed at some point image Thanks for teh giveaway chance.

    I think it's a GREAT idea!

Actually, I want to see your owner comments in the table and ending up making a bunch of individual clicks to see what they were, so I think you should get rid of the "more" click if possible. My .o2

Very kool set of 8 reales you got there... I would recommend to upgrade those XF pieces for some nice original AU's. I know they should be a few of these out there. I don't know of any dealers in your area, but there are plenty of dealers in Southern California that specialize in early Mexican coinage. The Long Beach Coin Expo would be a great place to start. GOOD LUCK !!!
  • baddspellarbaddspellar Posts: 270 ✭✭✭
I have a few 8 Reales pieces, and I'm interested in the mints myself.
In addition to mint history, would you be able to show a small scale map showing where the mints were located, using something like
Google Static Maps, and to show an example of the mintmark from that mint?
  • Great set! Personally, I think your presentation is excellent, however, for the sake of being able to provide you a suggestion, I would ask that you update your "owner's comments" to include when, where, and why you purchased certain coins. Good luck!
  • ZoharZohar Posts: 6,629 ✭✭✭✭✭
Perhaps add how long you have been building the set and the challenges in getting the select pieces into it.
  • I would have to agree with ajaan and make all the backgrounds in black
  • Roman,

Regarding your final comments, specifically "… Mexico's version of the 8 Reales (and later the Peso) … remained a popular coin in the Far East throughout the nineteenth century", I would add, "… so much so, that the United States in 1903 minted Pesos, rather than Dollars, for their new possession of the Philippine Islands, which they took from Spain in 1898 as a result of the Spanish-American War". Of course though, I'm a tad biased. image

I love your introductory write-up, but I would suggest you seek to duplicate your efforts on PCGS's site, since viewing the coins via a pop-up window, accessed by clicking on thumbnail images of the coins, while staying on the same page is a much more pleasant experience, in my opinion.

    Cool set image

    My comments--

I had to look up "immediate forebear" as it made me think of forbear (which has a different connotation) and somehow my brain wanted to see written as forebearer, which is apparently the rarer variant of the word. Great word and made me look stuff up!

For an ease-of-reading for my eyes anyway, I might consider breaking up the first paragraph--leaving the introductory sentence as a stand alone, and start the second paragraph/break with the second sentence. Not exactly proper paragraph structuring as I learned in school, but on the internet it seems to help the eyes in breaking things up.

Really fun to look at and read about!

    Cathy

PS, this is REALLY a lot of fun to read about now that I've moved--I went to Gibraltar a couple weeks ago and saw where one side of the 'pillars of Hercules' stood. Last time I'd seen the Rock of Gibraltar was in 1994 or so when passing by on an aircraft carrier...it was foggy and hard to see that time.

  • Not sure if I'm doing something wrong but there is a column headed 'pics' but nothing happens when you click the icon, the next column over (certification#) shows the picture fine however.

Also like the use of the word 'crusty' to descibe some of these, wonderful coins, but unique in how they look compared to most other coins.
Still thinking of what to put in my signature...

Can you do pics of it with lighting at different angles that would move with a mouse control? That always gives me a better impression of most coins.

I honestly cannot think of anything you could do to improve this set, short of upgrading the actual coins, which are lovely enough. The thumbnail images at the top of the page and the set intro are great, the coins are great, what can I say.

I noticed you had some TrueViews chopped in half because of the way NGC does obverse and reverse in separate images. I've always preferred a merged image with both obverse and reverse in the same picture. If you did it that way, like the TrueViews and some of the images you've posted here, then you could use the first picture (what NGC assigns to the "obverse") as a place for the merged obverse-reverse, and the second picture (what NGC assigns to the "reverse") as a place to put a merged picture of the front and back of the slab itself.

Then again, perhaps merged images wouldn't display the way you like- I dunno.

I've tried this with my humble Custom Set, which admittedly is still in rough draft stage and in need of some updating. (Hey, you've just inspired me to do that). I am still finding the NGC Registry interface confusing and a bit user-unfriendly. I suppose it gets better with familiarity.

    Great set. Congratulations. image
