Maybe I've just had a long day, but Joe Buck + Time McCarver = mute button.

Yesterday, McCarver said "Baseball, a game of oblique angles, has become a game of oblique injuries." image

Absolutely. They call games for people who have never watched a baseball game before in their lives.

McCarver doesn't bother me. Chip Caray and John Sterling are the devil's afterbirth.

Brandon Inge hit a home run to left as McCarver was saying that Inge would never pull the ball against Alexi Ogando.

was that before or after he said the team who scores the most runs will probably win the game?

only thing more painful was Francona not knowing that KPH is less than MPH. and one wonders why he was fired......and i know broadcasting is not his profession

one exception (for me) was John Miller doing a National broadcast with the Giants playing.

but yeah McCarver, Buck, Morgan all of 'em TBS FOX

  • How about Terry Francona? What a dope!

Actually, I can't stand ANY of them. Eric Karros? AJ 'Flamer' Pyrsinski (spelling?).

It's pretty shocking actually how little talent they have at their disposal.

Joe Buck just plain sucks. Not just in baseball, but in any announcing venture. Tim McCarver is just boring. I never really had a problem with Ken Harrelson. He's a homer, just like Harry Caray, Skip Caray, Jack Brickhouse, etc., but at least he is entertaining. Considering the boring White Sox product he has had to work with over the last few years, he's been the most entertaining thing on there. I put myself through college delivering pizzas down in South Florida, and I got to hear a lot of Boog Sciambi doing Marlins games. I am not surprised that he is becoming one of the bigger names in MLB announcing. He's pretty darned good. Of course, my favorite announcer ever was the Florida Panthers/New Jersey Devils announcer Chris Moore (not sure where he is now) who just made you laugh the entire game. Chris and Boog actually had a show for awhile on WQAM in Miami right after Hank Goldberg (the biggest d-bag on radio).

RE: Hawk Harrelson. Even a large portion of the fanbase doesn't like the guy. He's beyond a typical homer. When the Sox are behind, or in any bad stretch, he just stops doing his job. Completely silent for minutes at a time, and he's the freaking play by play commentator. He pushed analysts (like the largely fan beloved) Tom Paciorek out the door. He doesn't really get along with Steve Stone, so the on-air chemistry is horrible. He's the modern rap version of a broadcaster, meaning no substance and nothing but catch phrases. He broadcasts for the White Sox and 90% of his story telling is Red Sox stories from the 60's... largely Yaz and Rico Petrocelli stories. He's also broadcasting in Chicago with a deep southern accent so that doesn't help either. People refer to him as Foghorn Leghorn. That said, when I listed my 5 most disliked, I was referring to national TV guys since WGN carries about a third of White Sox broadcasts. If I were to include everyone then John Sterling and Michael Kaye would shoot up that list as well.

As a southern boy myself, perhaps that's why I like hwk. But, to each his own. I am sure that somebody out there loves Joe Buck too.

  • There are announcers and anchors that I just flat refuse to listen to. McCarver is very high on that list - right next to Chris Berman.

I'm going way back but I sure liked and grew up listening to Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek.

I actually thought Pierzynski did relatively well in the few cut-ins they had with him in the game that I watched.

Sean McDonough should be a lead play-by-play guy for the MLB playoffs. He's tremendous in any sport he announces.

And how great was the game of the week with Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese. Waite Hoyt was a treasure too.

I grew up listening to Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek. They seemed to have a good mix.

In my opinion Jon Miller is one of the best announcers around and is always entertaining to listen to. It was a shame he often had to dumb down his commentary to accommodate Joe Morgan or whoever he was partnered with.

  • Just heard McCarver say "No advance by Beltre as the Yankees take the lead."... Gee, Tim.... are you watching the Yankees play on some other universe, because it sure looks like Texas and Detroit to me. Retire this feeble-minded old geezer.

I love both Jon Miller and Bob Costas, but, being an LA native, nothing says warm hot dogs like Vin Scully.
  • I miss Will McDonough. A lot. But I'm comforted by having had many years of Sam and JD calling Rangers hockey games. That was like a family. Jon Miller never did wrong as far as I can tell. The rest? At least they don't have Bill OReilly and Megan Kelly calling the games. It would be kinda funny, though... Glenn Beck on the sidelines with a hat made out of hot dog wrappers.
  • Another gem from McCarver as they go to the seventh inning stretch "It's a five letter word, S-T-R-I-K-E"

I couldn't agree more. His commentary actually detracts from the game and that's kinda hard to do. Just the sound of his voice forces me to mute the TV - not to mention the ridiculous comments he tries to come up with in a pitiful attempt to be witty.

and last night something like... "Tony Larussa is taking off his glasses. That's a sign he's going to make a pitching change"

Larussa eventually did make the change...but this kind of commentating has ZERO to do with the game.
