List of Griffey Rookie Cards

I've decided to collect all of Griffey Jr's rookie card. Here is the list I can come up with of legit Griffey rookies from memory and ebay. Can someone let me know if I missed any?

Upper Deck
Topps Traded
Topps Traded Tiffany
Fleer
Fleer Glossy
Donruss
Donruss Rookies
Donruss Baseball's Best
Score Traded
Score Young Super Stars
Score Masters
Bowman - Regular and the one with his dad
Bowman Tiffany - same as above
Classic Purple
Classic Orange

A couple of questions:

1) Was the Topps ML Debut card issued in 1989? I see PSA flips with 1989 but I thought it was a 1990 set.
2) How many Mother's cards were issued in 1989? Are these considered legit rookies?
3) Are the 1989 Star Co cards considered rookies?
4) Should I collect the minor league cards as well?
5) Are there any other regional cards that I am missing?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Mike

If you're going to consider Star cards, then you have to do the '88 Nova and Silver, not 1989.

Thanks - I'll add the Fleer Glossy.

I think if you include the Star and Classic, you should include the 87 Bellingham card. The 89 Debut was issued in 1990 and I think he has four 89 mothers cookie card.

Edit - Also, they are not rookies, but I think the 90 Topps, Leaf, and Score are important cards as well. I am very slowly putting together his PSA set, I include these with rookies.

The set is called 1989 Debut, but it was released in 1990.

I'm not sure what you mean by "legit rookie cards," since "rookie card" is a term that's open to a lot of debate.

It's hard to put a number on how many of the Mother's Cookies cards were printed. The team set was a stadium-give-away, and those are usually just for the "first X,XXX fans", but who knows how many more were produced. The 4 card mini-set was found 1-each in bags of Mother's Cookies around Washington.

It's possible that the 1989 Mother's Cookies Mariners has a print run of less than 20k, which would put it at being his 2nd or 3rd least printed card in 1989.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I am looking forward to this chase. I know that most of these can be picked up in PSA 10 for $30 or so. I think the toughes are going to be the Bowman Tiffany and Fleer Glossy. 1989 was probably the last time this was truly "just a hobby" for me.

I see a Bowman Tiffany PSA 10 on ebay right now for over $1100. That seems about 10-20% high, I recall seeing them go for less than a grand.

  • I also like the 1990 fleer young superstars, and 1990 topps glossy rookie

By rookie cards, I mean licensed cards issued his rookie year.

a grand is about on the Bowman Tiffany. The last Fleer Glossy PSA 10 i followed also went for over a grand, while a PSA 9 (from the same seller) ended for $75 the day before it

    To answer your questions;

    1. His Topps ML Debut card is in fact listed as a 1990 card. However, as an avid Griffey rookie collector, I do include this card for my own personal preference.

    2. There were 5 total Mothers cookie cards issued in 1989. There was a 4 card set of just him, pictured inside the Kingdome. And also he was part of another Mariners team set for Mothers cookies, this card is pictured outside. All of which are considered legit rookies.

    3. 1989 Star cards are considered his rookies. Think of them as a 1B if the base cards like Upperdeck are a 1A. The above poster is half right, there is a 1988 Star Nova and Silver series. However, there is also 2 different 1989 Star sets, both 11 card sets, the main difference being the backs. One set has a yellow back and one set had a white back. In addition to those, there are also some Star promo cards, a Blue, a Yellow, and a Green ad card.

    4. My opinion would be yes, collect the minor league cards as well. Be careful however, there are tons of counterfeit Griffey minor league cards floating around.

    5. Fleer Glossy, Franklin Carmels, Pacific Candy Bar Card Blue, White and Yellow, Phoenix Magnet, Strat-O-Matic Baseball Card Game, Topps Heads Up Test, Upperdeck Sheets #2 and #3.

    Hope this helps!

Bmaggs - Thank you so much.

I remember that Bazooka issued a set in 1989, did that include Griffey? I know it included Jefferies and Sheffield.

  • Griffey has no 1989 Bazooka Card, you are thinking of his 1990 Bazooka Shining Star card I believe
