Will the NBA season be totally cancelled and if it is will anyone care?

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,120 ✭✭✭✭✭
Unlike the NFL lockout [which, in the event of possible cancellation of the 2011 season would have caused the Feds to get involved to save the day and protect the "public" from a "year without pro football"image]; the NBA lockout seems to be something that the general population is not giving any thought to. If the general public does think about an NBA lockout, they probably shrug their shoulders and say "so what".

If the pro game is absent for 2011-2012, I expect that the college game will see a small increase in interest and media coverage.

The Bulls are finally entertaining again with Derrik Rose and now this.
I will miss it. I don't find college basketball that interesting anymore, the level of talent just isn't the same as it was in the 80's.
The top 10 college players maybe will be on an NBA roster next year.

I have been a fan of the NBA for as long as I can remember...probably the mid-1970s when I first started grade school. The game may have changed over the years, but my excitement level for watching has not. I understand both sides of this argument. The owners shouldn't be paying ridiculous amounts of money for average/good players(Hi Joe Johnson!) and the players are spoiled millionaires who across the majority aren't responsible enough to live on their already huge salaries. If the season is lost(which I really think is going to happen now)I will miss the game. I'm not going to go into deep depression over it though. And luckily, College football and basketball, the NFL and NHL will help bridge the time until Spring Training baseball starts!

I hope they cancel the Lebron commercials. Does he really go to his favorite burger joint with a huge smile plastered on his face being all nice and cheerful to everyone? I almost expect him to break out in song at any moment from just the pure joy of the fast food experience. I've never seen a hamburger make anyone that happy. Man, I wonder what he'll be like if he wins an NBA championship. He's really going to be happy. I bet he'll eat hamburgers' until he gets sick.
  • I won't miss a minute of them not playing.

Like anyone cares. The WNBA only exists just for the sake of political correctness. As for women's college b-ball, there's Tennessee, Connecticut, and then everyone else.

Let me think about it for a sec..

    Yeah, don't care at all.

Now if you asked would I care if the NBA ceased to exist, that may take a little more pondering...

Okay, done pondering and still wouldn't care one bit.

I saw a media report that President Obama is "Heartbroken" about the cancellation of the first two weeks of the NBA season.

If it appears that the entire NBA season will be cancelled, I wonder if the President would take action to have the government intervene into the labor negotiations and force the owners to lift the lockout? He does like basketball.

It will make for a long, boring winter, that's for sure. This last years playoffs were so exciting and now there won't be a season at all. Have you ever been really 'in tune' with a sport, you know all the players so well you feel like you know them personally? That's me with the NBA.
For the folks saying they don't care at all, well, that's pretty disappointing. You don't like the sport, that's fine. But think about all the arena employees, waiters/waitresses nearby, etc. They will he in a tough spot.

I sure hope not. He better worry more about doing a better job so the non-spoiled millionaires can get jobs(at least the ones who are actually willing to work).

Are you sure about that five minutes!?
  • Let me see if I understand the game. They play a 6 month season to eliminate 2 teams from the play-offs. Then they proceed to the play-offs which takes 6 more months. If they tried real hard they might could make a 13 month season out of it.

I hope the don't have a season. I wont miss it.
  • I hope they fold and I'll tell you why: there is a fine line between "legitimate" sports leagues like the NHL and the WWE. Most of us above the Palin Line realize that WWE is scripted, however, only some of us can fully appreciate just how subjective the officiating, drafting, etc are in the NBA.

Basketball is a fun sport to play, and can be fun to watch. Watching surly 7 footers shuffle up and down the floor, dunking without hardly leaving their feet isn't fun to watch. Watching your mid-level NBA team get mugged by the Favorite Sons with no calls/your guys get within the same ZIP code as Jordan, Shaq, Lebron, etc and they foul out isn't fun. And watching beady eyed cop-wannabe NBA officials doing their best Frank Drebin "auditions" isn't fun either.

Not really. From 1995-2010, only four times has a team besides Tennessee or Connecticut won the championship. And though there was a 16 seed beating a 1 seed in the women's tourney (Harvard over Standford in 1998, only a grand total of five 13 seeds and zero 14 and 15 seeds have made it out of the first round. IOW, the women's tournament doesn't have nearly as many exciting upsets as the men's tournament does. How boring...

I am an unapologetic NBA junkie and will absolutely miss it. My guess is another 50 game season. The NHL has become really entertaining again but regular season match-ups don't excite me the way some NBA regular season match-ups do. Plus, it means the best so on all of television, Inside the NBA, won't be on.

I will miss it. Basketball is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more fun to watch than Baseball!!

I don't know what they are fighting about (I never watch the news), they already make way too much money!
  • I won't miss it. I lost any ounce of interest I had many years ago. When Jordan hit that last second shot against Utah in the Finals. His pushoff was so blatant that I just could not believe that the officials didn't call it. Then the game where the Lakers came back in the fourth quarter thanks to the officiating. Another snow job. Tim Donoughy (sp?) was telling the truth. The media likes to criticize him, but everything he says makes sense. During Jordan's career, I saw HUNDREDS of calls that Jordan got in which he was barely touched or not touched at all. Shaq got them too for awhile. Yet, if Olden Polynice was to do the same thing, he'd get the opposite calls. I am not saying that this doesn't happen in other sports. It does. But in basketball it just seems to be the rule. Screw the NBA. Good riddance. I'll watch hockey.

A couple years ago (I think 2), the NBA actually changed their rule for traveling. Why? Because, literally, no officials called it correctly. If you found yourself screaming at the TV because they weren't calling traveling correctly, you were right! So what did the NBA do? Yell at their refs for not following the rulebook? Of course not. They changed the rulebook to "reflect the reality of the game as it's being called". Gimme a break.

As for me, I won't miss the NBA if they cancel the season. I probably haven't watched a full regular season NBA game in 15 years or more. I was a big fan in the late 80s and early 90s but soured on the game when Pat Riley's Knicks took all the offensive style out of it. I watched a lot of the playoffs last year, though, and was really into it. Some really, really good basketball was seen. But that isn't going to make me miss it. I'll just watch football and hockey instead - which is what I would do even if the NBA played.
