i remember someone asking a similar question about these `snakes` on this coin.
they are gouges from reeded edge coins, generally quarters in most cases.
so its post-mint-damage in short

The marks look raised to me. I'll guess a die gouge caused it.

Probably impossible, but it appears to be a manatee chasing a dolphin.

silly, as the dolphin is far faster......

Lincoln had fleas. Really big ones. He kind of grew fond of them, as they would keep him company while he was sitting on a log reading a book or pointing to the capitol building in Springfield. He wore that hat so they'd have room to jump around, but wouldn't escape. Odd duck, that Lincoln fellow.
