Input Wanted on Selling Rare Items

I'm looking for some input please! I'd like to sell a couple of very rare 1962 Salada coins that I've owned for many, many years - the Brandt (Orioles) and Williams (Name on Right) variations. Both are in superior shape and, at the very least, I hope they would sell for in excess of $5,000 each. I'm basing these prices on what a couple of Brandt coins have sold for the recent past. (I'm not aware of any Williams coins being offered for sale in recent years.)

With items of this value, I'm looking for some input on a way to sell that would be safe and generate the most money. I've been selling baseball collectibles on eBay since 1999 and currently have a feedback record of 5,418 positives, 0 neutrals and 0 negatives. But I've never offered any items on eBay that exceeded the $750-$1000 range.

My thinking right now is to offer the items on eBay as auctions with fairly high starting bids. I've got an excellent eBay feedback record with a bit of name recognition. But maybe there's a better way than selling through eBay? Thanks in advance for any feedback!

it only cost .50 to try it on ebay with a buy it now or best offer. Might try that.

for that kind of scratch, you may want to consider getting them authenticated prior to selling them....

you'll more than get your money back in the eventual selling price..........

I thinking that you will have a tough time selling either for $5,000 or more.

This one sold last year for $825- in H&S.

Ebay is probably the best route, but I do not imagine you will get a single bite. Good luck.

Bob Lemke wrote a really good article about new discoveries [variations] to this set last year:

  • if you don't wan't to be exposed, then just put it in an ebay store for a fixed price...
we pay 3 cents per month to put high end items in the store....
your cost may be a little higher if you have a store...
you'll be somewhat exposed if you give to an auction house ( catalog ) or if you let it run at auction....

ebay store will be your best option

I think the December 2010 sales at $700 (plus vig) exposes the potential for wild swings in price, and is the most recent price example:

How much did it being way o/c kill the price though?
  • the huge price swings strengthen the reason to protect such an item....

there are most likely only a handful of buyers that will pay top dollar for such an item...

I would grade them first, it's like the lottery, if you receive a 9 or 10 on one or both, you could be talking about a lot of money.

Once you know the grade, your position will be much stronger as long as they are as nice as you claim, if you don't like the grade, you can always crack them out.

The numbers suggest that a 5 is worth around 700.00 but an 8 is worth 7,000.00. Two auctions is not much to base things on, but that's what we have in this case. The third auction's coin has some scratching on the reverse and something on the lower right and it went for a lot IMO.

Good luck with whatever you decide. Please keep us posted!
