My all-time favorite piece, and nothing will ever top it. It's my 4th child . I have it framed with his Rookie card....the 1964 Topps Team Photo of the Raiders where he was the coach.
Al went to Stanford. He was always a great mind of sports, but was a bad player. He tried out for the basketball team, and was cut. After being cut, he still showed up everyday to practice. It got so bad the coaches kicked him out of the arena any time they would be practicing. One week over Thanksgiving break, Al had a lot of friends on the team, and they let him know when the team photo would be. He snuck in, stole a jersey, and got into the photo. This is the original 1948 school newspaper, with Davis embedded eternally with the 1948 Stanford basketball team. He is 4th from the right in the back row.
"In Al We Trust!"
Looking for Autos of HOFers Charles Bidwill, Tim Mara, Joe Carr, Fritz Pollard, Guy Chamberlin & Bill Hewitt
Being a Bronco fan since I was a kid, I never liked the Raiders (because they would beat the Broncos on a regular basis when I was a kid). My dislike of the Raiders aside, you have to admit that Al was completely devoted to his team, more so than most if not all of his peers.
It will be interesting to see how the Raider organization does post Al.
he "made" John Madden and others. i think Madden always called him "Mr. Davis" or Al Davis if he was referring to him, never just Al.
i admired him especially the first go round in Oakland, yet felt he should have passed the reigns years ago. i think it was in his blood to die in the saddle.
