Grading night at the Capital City Coin Club

This has been a very successful activity for our coin club, so I thought I'd share...
Capital City Coin Club here in Austin has had 3 'Grading Nights' this year. Members can bring coins from their collection, and have them graded by a panel of the experienced members of the club. Our third one was Thursday, and we changed the format to keep things running shoothly. The previous nights, we had no limit on the number of coins, and we worked one-on-one with the owners of the coins in an 'Antiques Roadshow' style format. This resulted in a lot of chaos around the grading table, so this last time, we set a limit of 3 coins per member. When they arrived at the meeting, they completed a 'submission form' and brought it and the coins to our table, where we graded all of the submissions while the meeting was taking place. There were 3 of us grading- local dealers Bryan Jones and James Arnold (formerly w/ANACS customer service), and me. We were fortunate to have Tim Hargis with us at the meeting as well. He was with ANACS for almost 20 years, and was their finalizer for most of them. He took that role again on Thursday, and would put the final grade on each coin once we had all rendered our opinion. During the process, we selected about 10 coins, and gave a presentation at the end of the meeting explaining why we gave the coins the grades they got. Also on hand was Michael Marotta, a noted numismatic author.

Good for the club that it is taking some time and effort, to educate some of the less advanced collectors in a way that holds their interest. (Unfortunately, this is a rare thing at local coin clubs.)
