in their pockets.
One of the collectors in our club just bought two older large cents with letters cut into the obverse....I find that less disturbing than these file cuts.

Enlighten me, what was a gear of this type used for? The OP coin doesn't look like it suffered any wear to the made grooves. Perhaps a fine filing tool for something softer, held between the finger and thumb to smooth something out?
The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
