Is the silver content of a French medal marked "Argent" a standard content?

I have a few French agricultural medals with "Argent" marked on the edge. Is the content standard? If it is, what is the silver content of "argent". Sterling?

As always, thank you for your help.

A good question, for which I do not have the answer, personally.

I always took it to be a generic term like "SILVER" would be in English, but now that you mention it, there could very well have been a standard, and probably was. (.835? .900? - I have no idea.)

  • Argent is the French word for silver. Next to the word, is there a hallmark symbol such as a "horn of plenty"? There may even be a number 1 or 2 next to it. That would assist you in determining the silver content.

How? I don't know what the horn of plenty nor what the 1 or 2 would mean either? image
