Live: 1978 Wax Topps Baseball Two Pack Rip - Resealed?

I'm going to rip these two 1978 Topps Baseball Wax Packs I got off ebay for so cheap they must be resealed - lets find out together!

Evidence, Exhibit A:

Evidence, Exhibit B:

The pack to the left has loose gum, it's punctured the wrapper some. The wrapper feels somewhat loose - the back does look like the type of back you see in a box, but I think I see roller marks.

The pack to the right is so tightly wrapped and shiny....

What do you guys think? Pack 2 to come shortly.

There is a Guidry and a Carlton Leaders Card - and they seem like they are sharp. But there was this top rip in the wrapper when I opened it:

Gum is correct size. Small tears in wrapper are not uncommon, either and cards do look sharp. I'd say the pack looks good.

  • Do the 2 pieces of gum add up or line up together to be the size of one unbroken piece? I looked at them but don't see how they could. Was there some small bits of gum besides what was pictured?

Did you pay attention to the wax and gum card? I've opened tampered-with 1978 packs before, so this his a little too close to home. Sometimes you get multiple wax or gum cards in it.

Pack 2 - the gum is a different size - and the cards didn't have that middle "turn" around flip:

Yeah - it was weird, it seemed to have a wax card at the right spot - but the gum doesn't "quite" line up - there was some powder residue - maybe it got broken up. As I went to further investigate, my 4 year old daughter shoved half of the piece into her mouth and immediately gagged.....

  • Judging by the condition of the gum piece in pack# 1, you should have one card with a nasty gum stain!
nice cards though looks like tbine's work the second looks like troutville work, you can still get your money

The gum looks incorrect in the 2nd pack actually...78 wax gum is thicker like the one in the first pack.

Edit to add: 2nd pack is definitely resealed.

  • I ripped a bunch of 78s...Sequence seems off...Don't recall Ken Clay being near George Zeber...Thought catchers rookies (Murphy/Parrish) or Morris rookie was in that sequence.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

You know the sequence for these? That's scary...

Both packs are resealed imo. Who ever rewrapped them forgot the tiny folds which I don't see in your pictures.

That's nothing, you should see Moran in action..image

Sequencing can vary, though it always follows a logical progression.

The first pack may be good, It's hard to say from just looking at the scan. At the very least, the gum is correct and the cards are pack fresh. I've opened a boatload of 78 wax and many legit packs have slight tears inside the wrapper folds, particularly in the location shown. If it is a reseal, it's a good one.

The second pack is not even close to legit. Gum is clear giveaway. Resealers often use late 80s and non-sport skinny gum to fabricate packs. And as nendee indicated, authentic 78 wax packs usually have a "turnaround" or break in the sequence midway through the pack.
