I'll be visiting the ANA Museum in Colorado Springs on Saturday...what should I see?

I'll be visiting Denver for the Sunday Broncos game with my 13 year old son and a friend and father of his this weekend, and we intend to run down to CO Springs to take in the ANA museum. Any input for us of specific parts to spend some time on as my son's friend and father aren't collectors, but are willing to humor us as they used to live in the Denver area.

The ANA Museum is not very big and I suspect that you will have plenty of time to see everything in it. The Harry Bass pieces are spectacular. And if you have extra time for non-numismatic interests, the Pioneers Museum in downtown Colorado Springs is also nice.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

    Thanks for the input.

I'm looking forward to it, hopefully a chance to see some unique items and perhaps gain a new appreciation for some other elements of numismatics you don't see at just every show that pops up. I anticipate spending a couple (2+) hours there.

The museum is a very nice destination. Garden of the Gods is also beautiful to take a nice walk around in. I also love the Church at the Air Force Academy. Beautiful building and grounds.

There is also Pikes Peak which you can drive up too or take the cog railway. CO is a beautiful state to explore.

  • Be sure to plan some time in the ANA library. It is a greatly under appreciated resource!

Between the exhibits and the library two hours is probably the right amount of time. You will love it. MJ

Have fun on your trip. Hopefully the football game will be a good one, but with the Broncos who knows.

If you get bored at the NAN museum in Colo. Springs, the suggestions of PonyExpress8 are good ones. Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak the AFA grounds and church. You can also stop by and check out the Broadmoor Hotel and if you are up for a drive head over the the Royal Gorge and walk across the 1,000+ high bridge that goes across the Arkansas River (I think is is the Arkansas River; and if so what is a river named "Arkansas" doing in Coloradoimageimage).

Further, if you are in Denver and want to snoop for Cameo proofs, stop by Rocky Mountain Coin on South Broadway and see what they have in stock [there are two other coin shops next to to Rocky Mountain Coin you can also stop in to look around].

Give them a call and ask if you can be part of a tour, or if someone can give you one. Hopefully they'll be able to help. Have fun and don't forget to see America's First Steam Press...

    The Bass collection is amazing.

You really need to get lunch or dinner at Solo's restraunt at the Colorado Springs airport. You can not miss this place. Part of the restraunt is a Korea war era K-97 air-to-air tanker refuler. Ask for a table in the plane! Order the bison steak. It's good stuff!
    Here's a link to Solo's.
