<< <i>The one with more color (left) was in the yellow envelope and is part of a collection i'm selling for a friend. The silver one (right) is mine that's been in an airtite since they came out and in an intert tube before that. It's just an HP scan of the coins, nothing fancy. The color one is SLIGHTLY more purple-ish than shows here but it's interesting to me to see first hand the storage differences. Same city, approximately same timespan, very different coins. And around the left coin devices it's not toned.. by the date and the lower stars. No clue what any of it means but i found it interesting. >>
The lack of toning around the date etc is commonly called "pullaway". Sometimes seen as an indication of natural toning. Thought to occur due to different striking pressure and metal flow I believe towards the outer part of the coin. Not an expert but what i have read on these boards.

Now that part I didn't know. I always thought it was because the device (star or date) protected the toning from the envelope from hitting that spot somehow. But your statement makes a lot more sense.
I am a sucker for toning so I prefer the envelope toning.
