Sporting News Defunct??

My magazine distributor sent me a email today informing me that
The Sporting News has ceased publishing
Since they have been around since 1886 with their mag this is major news if this is true!

To cease publishing their printed magazine should not affect their online sports website at all.

They have been working too much building their internet presence with their website and fantasy sports and social media outlets like facebook and twitter (none of which currently mention shutting down anything--at least none that I could find after visiting their website and facebook page in the last few minutes after reading your post) to just fold everything. Shutting down a printing wing of their operation makes sense in the internet age.

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

it's just not the same sitting on the crapper with a laptop in your lap instead of a magazine in your hand......

The Sporting News ceased to exist for me many years ago. I subscribed for a long time, but stopped when they stopped the emphasis on baseball. I switched to Baseball America and never looked back.

FWIW-Google has nothing on it, nor does the SN website. Time will tell.

  • According to my latest issue it says they have decided to become a monthly publication, merging with their affiliated Sporting News Yearbooks. I remember my first issue from 1975 with Willie Horton on cover, times sure have changed, remember waiting eagerly for the box scores. Final straw for me, will not be reupping my subscription this time.

have to agree......however being of an advanced age of 59 I still prefer the paper or a magazine as I sit and contemplate.........my kids laugh at me when I even attempt to do a text message.......I can type almost 100 words a minute on a typewriter but it takes about two days for me to do one text
