How do you deal with out-right lies on eBay?

I ran across this much darker than white lie this morning. I sent the seller the following msg.:
Why do you state "According to PCGS records this coin is the highest graded by PCGS"? There are 94 graded PR69DCAM!
Should eBay be notified if the seller doesn't fix their description?
Since the seller also states "I OFFER A SEVEN DAYS RETURN POLICY ONLY IF MY DESCRIPTION OF THE COIN IS NOT CORRECT" , at least any buyer would have some recourse! LOL

  • My attitude is always to give the seller the benefit of the doubt --- either he is totally unknowledgable or he made an honest mistake). And also to think twice before bidding on his wares---he is almost certainly overstating other aspects as well.

there is one seller on eBay (I don't recall who, right now) whoi routinely seems to advertise 68CAM's as "highewst graded by PCGS" in cases where the registry would agree, because there are no 69 CAMs or 70CAMs--but he ignores the fact that most people would consider 68 or 69DCAMS to be higher grades than 68CAM. I've actually bid on some of his auctions, but I do so with the knowledge that he may be either unknowledgable or a tad dishonest (ie, I don't bid as mich as I might if someone I knew and trusted were offering the same coin).

I e-mailed the seller, recommending he correct his/her listing before getting reported to Safe Harbor. If the auction isn't fixed by say Monday, I will report it.

  • Thanks for the back-up, Brian.
Perhaps, if this seller recieves enough notices, there will be one less trying to dupe the the novices! image

  • I ran into an Ebay seller last week that was offering a PCGS Proof69 2001 $5 Capitol Visitor Center Commemorative. In his description he stated that collectors were snapping up the Uncirculated Coin thinking it was the rare version when in actuality they were confused, being the proof version has a much lower mintage. I decided to send a message to the seller stating that the mintage of the proof $5 CVC was 26,499 as of February 20th, while the Uncirculated $5 CVC's mintage ended at 6,748. He wrote me back saying that he was only considering the single coin options, and that the only reason it was 26,499 was because of the 3 piece sets that were sold, also stating that if I thought collectors would break up their 3 piece sets for grading then "I guess you are right". I tried to explain to him that mintages include ALL options. He also states in the description that the coin should be selling for over $1000.00 shortly, being that the mintage is just a few hundred over that of the 1997 $5 Jackie Robinson. I really hope the newer collectors do a bit of research before buying into some of these Ebay sellers claims.

On Apr-13-02 at 23:47:29 PDT, seller added the following information:

"I was told by couple of collectors on E-bay that PCGS has 94 coins graded Proof 69DCameo."

Thanks to all that helped keep this one honest! image

At least for this one! image
