Moneyball Movie - have you seen it?

Finally went and say it this past weekend. I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10. I believe it was about 90% accurate with the typical Hollywood portrayal being the rest. I enjoyed it but as a genuine baseball fan, the Hollywood portrayal & drama insertions gave is some unrealistic scenes. I don't think GM's talk to other GM's and in the middle of a conversation put them on hold so their assistant can spit out a name to ask for. And I certainly don't remember the 11-0 deficit being erased so the catcher/1st baseman (special FA signing) can hit a walk-off HR.

I liked the move. Definitely some wrong things from hollywood but over all good flick.

  • I only saw the previews, and it seems like they are making it out like it is a genius move turning a league average hitting catcher into a first baseman.

Had Beane taken an average hitting first baseman, and turned him into a catcher...then it would be worthy of recognition.
Are you sure about that five minutes!?

I agree, you always see catchers being converted into 1st or 3rd basement but rarely see it going the opposite way......Indians have Santana who was converted to catcher but now is being groomed as 1st baseman.....
ps. haven't seen the movie and will wait for it to come out at Blockbuster.....

Good memory and great research, now let me take my foot out of my mouth.
  • They really destroyed Art Howe in this movie. Living in the bay area I can tell you that he wasn't pleased at all with his portrayal in the movie.

Yeah, I saw some stuff on ESPN about it as well. Can't say I blame him.

Funny how Oakland hasn't really been successful since steroid testing went into effect. Coincidence?

It's not that. It's the fact that the owner of the A's is a cheapskate and has one foot out the door of Oakland and won't spend on players or the team until they move to San Jose or get a new stadium, whichever comes first. The A's are basically a AAA ball club that happens to play in the majors.

True 'dat. BTW, the AAA team for the A's, the Sacramento River Cats, draw nearly half the number of fans per game as the A's do. Oakland drew 1.476 million last year for an average of 18,222. The River Cats drew their lowest amount ever last year but still had 600,000 fans in 71 games for an average of 8,450. PCL Attendance
