  • I'll weigh in. It appears the arc is from another coin. Could it be one coin laying on top of this coin would cause a line of toning? I'm not so sure the mark is a striking feature.

    Nice photography by the way,

  • YJ, its not toning. it is raised at the top of the lettering like a second rim.

  • Are you sure it's not some organic crud from a distant time? It just looks that way as it passes over the rim. I have two Lincoln Cents with similar arc-type toning from other coins that have been in contact. However, you have the best view in hand. I'm only guessing from my experience and looking at the images. Edit to add: The mark looks to be of the same origin and time of the other dark spots in other areas of the coin as a reason why I'm inclined to say it is post mint.

Could it have been encased in an aluminum holder as a lucky coin then removed and circulated?

The aluminum holder has an opening smaller than the coin, then they crimp it shut.
Since the coin is dished up towards the rim then as the aluminum holder was closed it pushed some metal from along the rim (the dishes arc) inward which actually raised up that area along the rim. Since aluminum is soft it left most of the normal rim but maybe flattened it a bit. I mean by smushing it made it raised, since the metal from the dish along the rim pushed inward toward the center of the coin so that outer area is slightly above the center area.

I'd be convinced this is the case if the coins diameter is slightly bigger than normal.

  • thanks grumpy, the rim looks normal obverse and reverse hence my curiosity. the coin itself is a POS and worth nothing but wanted to know if it was a clash or some other anomaly and want to learn. your answer is a possibility. thanks.

i think i will go ahead and concur with this

it appears to have an edge, but it is an optical illusion
