1909 VDB PCGS PR64RB MPL UP FOR AUCTION AT PITTSBURGH ANA

It's been awhile since we've followed the bidding on my favorite Lincoln cent, the 1909VDB Matte Proof. Not many of these exist today, less than 200 in my opinion. The new PCGS Coin Facts Auction data bank shows that only 63 have been auctioned in the past 10 years. (since October, 2001)
This particular coin is a typical average PR64RB. 40 of the 190 in total graded by PCGS,NGC, & ANACS have been graded as PR64RB (21.1%). Only the PR65RB with 47 graded is higher. So far 3 bidders have bid this coin to $18,400 with the juice. Not bad since a similar PR64RB in a PCGS holder went for $17,863 this past March.
While conventional wisdom says the Lincoln cent Matte Proof coin's popularity has wained, I am certain that is NOT true for this rare variety. For those who seek one for their collection, maybe this is your chance if you can afford it. I just don't believe you will ever be able to aquire one of this variety for under five figures. Good luck.
Here is the link to the auction on October 13th at the Pittsburgh ANA.

<< <i> Pretty weird that they put VDB on the label twice though. >>
You know Michael, I hadn't realized that my label has it twice also. From looking at more recent labels of this variety it appears that PCGS eliminated the third line "VDB" from the label at some point even when they still showed the series number and coin number on the label. Steve

It is interesting that there have been NO further bids on this heritage auction in the two weeks since I first posted this thread. We remain at $18,400 with the juice with just ONE day left for online bidding. The live bidding is on Thursday.

<< <i>With 1 1/2 hours to go before live bidding it's up to $20,000 ($23,000). This is different from a few hours ago. I thought internet bidding ended last night. >>
Bob,
My "guess", and it is just a guess, is that if one of the four internet bidders upped their bid after regular internet bidding closes, but before the "live" bidding occurs, either by phone, fax, in person, etc., then the bid is updated. In this case, it appears that two of the four internet bidders have upped their bid since the increment jumped by $3k. The actual bidding on this coin will be awhile past the 6:30PM start time.
