The other day I had a 24-year-old guy (I'm 45) always tell me how my sports knowledge is buried in nostalgia.
I quickly retorted, "What can you tell me about Ed Reed from the Ravens?"
The kid said (and he is reasonable knowledgeable about football): He's a really GOOD player.
My reply was "Good? He's one of the, if not the, greatest free safeties ever to play in the NFL. Part of being a sports historian and enthusiast is knowing greatness in the moment so you can talk about it later with a more objective view.
When I played hockey in the 1970's, I felt the same way about Bobby Orr.
