State Stamp On Penny

I have come across a 1983 penny that has an outline of the state of Connecticut and the initials CT impressed on the obverse. I do not see any ill-effects on the reverse. No pics - can't get the camera to show it clearly.

-How is this put on the coin? Handheld tool or larger machine?
-Is this something people do to see how widely a coin circulates (like a Where's George dollar)?
-Was this a fad in another era?

They made all sorts of counterstamps on cents.

All the states, masonic symbols, Kennedy added, bicentennial, space landings, anything.

    Here's a few:

  • I occasionally find those while roll searching , ive 4 now and from what i understand it was some kind of promotion back in the 80's.I havnt seen one post 82.I'd imagine there's all 50 and wouldnt mind collecting them all but it might well be near impossible now.

So it was issued by the mint with the stamp?
  • No , wasnt the US mint.

    counterstamped.

here is specific info about what you have

as noted they are damaged, and not for pure coin collectors (numimatics), however, there are some collectors of these and other counterstamped coins.

I have found several dozen of them in roll searching - the one I think is most interesting is the "First ZN" on a 1982 cent. I have found several Masonic counterstamped cents - suggesting that these guys lost their "lucky pennies".
