Poor Wayne Simmonds.....shootout incident

This is really messed up. For those that don't know, Simmonds is a black hockey
player who was recently traded to the Flyers from the Kings.

This shows how much I know about Hockey... I thought there was an actual shootout. lol
  • should not be happening.
  • I thought the same that a player was involved in a shooting.

So I have a case here of Dominion hockey. Any RC's I should be looking for? I know Crosby, Gretzky, Kane, a few Bruins players but that's it. I got a good price on it, and know it will go up in price, but I think I'll rip it. Thanks.

Hockey is dominated by whites. Hockey needs time to evolve. I'm not sure how many non-whites are in the NHL, but it would be interesting to know.

EagleEye, do you know how many non-whites play in the NHL? I'm not a big Hockey guy, but Super Mario and Brett Hull were my favorites.

  • I don't think there's more than 15 non-whites on active NHL rosters.
I'm sure there's more on their AHL and OHL affiliates.

Like the hockey slogan says, "hockey is for everyone."
  • Found this on wikipedia.
29 players in the NHL and their affiliates from black African descent.
I see 10 -13 on active NHL rosters.

what do you mean by evolve? Its an expensive sport and thats why many inner city schools don't have it and thats where the interest would be raised to actually play.

I'm a minority, and I'm interested to know what makes this a racist incident. If they haven't been able to identify the fan who threw it, why does everyone presume it was an act of racism? Not every negative thing that happens to a minority is from racism.

I see 20 (if Emery makes the Hawks as the backup).

Change peoples minds. It's a new game with more races and cultures. It takes time for people to accept sometimes.

Baseball broke the color barrier in the 1950's. In the 1970's it was much better for the players, but their were still some issues. It took baseball many years to really be accepting of black players in MLB.

Players and fans all must evolve and accept the changes. Hopefully Hockey can do it faster than Baseball.

NO, not all Players or Fans are the problem. It's a new game.

hockey is not baseball in the 1950's. I'd venture to say hockey has had the lowest amount of race related incidents than any other major sport....pro or college. It's one isolated incident by one moron.

Someone threw a banana at him. It's a rather odd choice of item unless it's for the implied connection with monkeys.

As far as the low number of black NHL players goes, there are very few hotbeds of youth hockey in the U.S., and most of those are near the Canadian border in areas that have few black residents - Minnesota alone accounts for about 20% of the American-born NHLers. Alaska accounts for more current American-born NHLers than Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky combined.

Pretty surprising to happen in Canada to be honest, like baseball in the US, hockey in Canada is extremely mixed... especially at the younger levels. It's not like this would have been something this person has never seen before (which doesn't excuse his actions). I find it truly bizarre. That said, to me it does appear to have been racially motivated. ...I'm shocked this person got away with it, I don't think he would have in a major city.
  • lanemyer85lanemyer85 Posts: 1,344 ✭✭✭
why would it be more surprising in Canada? From what Simmonds, Mayers, and Kevin Weeks have said, they've endured more of this type of stuff at the junior level than anywhere else in their careers. Weeks had the same thing happen to him in Montreal back in the early 2000s.

I wasn't going to comment on this because these types of threads usually blow up, but for the sake of Mike and others who might question whether or not racism was involved, I think I have some helpful comments.

First of all, I thought that the banana as a racist taunt was pretty much universally known. If you do not know, a simple google search will provide you with a global selection of ways in which it has been employed as a symbol that links black people with monkeys. There should be no debate about whether or not this was an intentional racist taunt. I'm sure that bananas were not available at the concession stand or the beer garden, and I'm pretty sure it was the only banana thrown on the ice during the night. Finally, there are no bananas for positive support rituals associated with the Flyers.

Secondly, I am an aboriginal person who played hockey at relatively high levels in Canada and the US so I can tell you that hockey can be and is a very racially intolerant sport, especially when you get into junior hockey and higher. I was often targeted and usually labeled as black, even though I've never been mistaken for a black person in any other setting. On the ice you take a lot of abuse from the other players, but it was the fans that were the worst. There was one place where a woman made a sign with my picture and the words "monkey boy" around it. She brought bunches of bananas to games which she tied to the end of a hockey stick and dangled them over the glass when I skated by. The sad thing was this behaviour was encouraged by the opposing team management, who actually gave her seats directly adjacent to the visiting players bench so she could be closer. I had two years of that crap before moving on to college hockey, and this was in the mid-90's. I'm sure it hasn't stopped. Just that when it happens in the NHL more people know about it.

This stuff happens too much, and I'm so happy that Wayne Simmonds is getting support from around the hockey world and in the press, because it simply isn't acceptable.

I'm not interested in sharing more specific info, but I hope my story gives some context to the overarching issue.

    -Nathanael

  • Nathanael,

Thanks for sharing, and I take your word for it, because I don't like how Canadiens embrace the fighting and violent hitting either in hockey.

However, I take issue with the fact that this is prevelant in American hockey circles. I have no facts to back it up, but I have never
heard of an American NHL city doing this, or at the USA collegiate level. I would like for you to provide info on if you've ever heard of
    it happening there.

I disagree. From Chris Simon to John Vanbiesbrouck, hockey seems to have had more ugly racial incidents in recent memory than any of the other major sports.

To answer the question asked of me about the prevalence of racism within US college hockey- I would say it is less prevalent with fans than it is with players. If you are a minority playing hockey at any high level in North America, you will be subject to a lot of messed up stuff from other players.

Don't get me wrong, the vast majority of players are great, but there are way too many players who use race as a way to upset an opponent.
