1952 Mantle PSA 5 Shilling

Check out the shilling. Looks like the high bidder noticed it too and retracted his bid. Look closely at the sequence of the shiller's bids and when the high legit bidder likely noticed it and pulled out by retracting his bid.

Sometimes that retraction option is a good out if you're getting shilled.

That shiller sure does how to keep it on the down low.

BTW, Levi had this one up for sale for a couple of years. I almost bought it but couldn't get over that big 'ol goiter on the side of the Mick's neck.

With enough shilling, you too can make money on a purchase from Levi. image

  • LOL, Certainly appears to be shilled.

Remember by any chance what Levi was asking for the card when he had it for sale?

Please educate me on identifying shill bidding - I've never been able to see how you can tell. How do you know this isn't two guys in a bidding war?

    Bid History >>

There's no way to be 100% certain, but certain cards and certain sellers have a history of questionable bidding behavior. Here are some of my red flags on this one:

    1) Bidder with 0 feedback; 26% bidding activity with seller in last 30 days

    2) It's a no reserve 52 Mantle. I looked into buying this exact card from Levi some time ago. He wouldn't go below 19.5K. Don't know what this person got it for, but there is ample temptation to shill when you're trying to earn a +ROI. If he paid 19.5K for this card, he'll have a tough time making money on this sale--but that won't stop a shiller from trying!

    3) Look at the 0 feedback buyers bidding activity. Small increments, many of which occur after the 16,750 bid was placed (which was later retracted). The retracting bidder likely noticed the current price getting closer and closer to his max price, looked at the history, and retracted his bid.

    4) Confirm/refute your suspicion by looking for the item to resurface on eBay because the shiller won the auction and had to "cancel"

This looks to me like the 0 feedback bidder was simply trying to get closer and closer to the max bid to push the price up. Problem is, now the high bidder backs out, and the current price is $1,500+ lower than previously. I hope they win--but then again, they'll just cancel the transaction and relist.

Thanks, I hadn't noticed the 0 feedback, I was trying to understand the bidding pattern.

If a buyer doesn't notice that white spot, or thinks it's a reflection on the holder, I could see this card going for a lot more. The color and centering are outstanding.

that kind of money they will notice the dot.
  • Here is another card that is getting some shilling action as I type!

    LINK
  • and sometimes it is not shill bidding, here is an auction that just finished a few days back. linky not a shill bidder

I almost canceled the the zero feedback bidder's bids, but glad I didn't otherwise the item would have only sold for 29.99 instead of 60.00. zero bidder paid immediately , but I wonder if this bidder stopped others from bidding thinking I was shill bidding my auction.

I don't worry about shill bidders as much as some people do, I just put my highest bid out (that I am willing to pay) and hope I win.

heck maybe I need to open up a couple ebay accounts with zero feedback and then bid like 10 to 20 times on some high dollar item I want and hope I scare off other bidders thinking that the seller is shill bidding the item LOL and get the item for like 50% of VCP.

I don't have any answers on how to stop shill bidding , but I don't believe it happens as often as some people believe it does.

I guess if I was going to shill bid one of my auctions , I would use snipe bid, or wait till the last 12 -18 hours before the auction ends and then bid the least I am willing to take for the item, sure wouldn't bid 10 to 20 times. JMHO

The 0 feedback bidder could be legit, maybe someone that does not want people to know he is bidding on this card.

Why would the zero feedback bidder place a bid on his high bid?

I think some of you are paranoid.

    Good for you.

Bidders sometimes play games by purposely making bidding appear to be shilling, who knows about this example but I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.
