Advice/Authentication T206's HOF+ Others Full pics inside...

I have the opportunity to purchase these cards, but obviously I need to be extremely cautious moving on because I don't know much about tobacco cards or how to authenticate them. I've dealt with the guy before for some 50's-70's stars and he gave me the opportunity to purchase these cards.

My main question here would be authentication, the prices are pretty fair if the cards grade out, but obviously "if it is too good to be true it probably is"

Some of them had paper loss on their back, and they come from a long time collector in arizona but my concerns are what they are.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

I'm by far no expert on this set, but they look awfully white to me. Does that concern anyone else?

  • Yeah, I don't even know identifying factors other than how to check for cards printed on a printer so I'm probably going to stay away but figured a few members might have something to say.

It probably depends on how much the risk costs. If you can afford the possibility if that money going up in smoke, then give it a try! image

I am by far not a T206 expert but I dont like the font used for the names and the background on the Tinker just doesnt look right. Looks more orange than red.

The only thing I'd probably take a shot on would be the mathewson, here is the prices he is asking.

    Mathewson- $400
    Tinker-$400
    Johnson- $400
    Brown-$300
    Chance-$300

    8x25= 200

    $2000 for all 13

I'm not concerned with white - as such Jeff.

Here's one I pulled off my photobucket:

The backs of those cards look artificially aged IMO - like someone used coffee or tea?

A suggestion - hit those with a black light - if it's new stock - it will iridesce due the 'brighteners' that they included in paper and card stock - I believe since the late 30s or 40s?

It's hard for to say looking at the scans on my laptop - some here are way better that this than I.

  • I was told on Net54 they looked good but wait for more opinions.

This one is 1800$ on ebay - I think the asking price is way too low - I'm still leaning towards these being fake.

That was my first thought, the prices on everything BUT the mathewson were very high, and mathewson was very low. I've received two "goods" on net54 and I think if I can pick them up at a good enough price I would grade them...
  • I do not think the Mathewson is that great a deal for a risk reward. It appears to have paper loss on the back which means it will grade a PSA 2.5. If it is real, it is a very nice 2.5, but not an incredible price.

If the guys at net54 say they're OK - I'm deferring to them since they have way more knowledge and experience than I.

I just don't feel goo about the appearance - tells ya what little I know?

    Good luck on your purchase.

  • Recieved confirmation from two others on net54 they are legit.

The staining on the backs (along with some paper loss) makes me think they were soaked off of an old scrap book.

IMO - something aint right. Be very careful.

Price is way too low. Backs (aging/wear) do not match the fronts. They look too glossy. They are all in almost perfect registration, which is the most troubling thing to me.

That is why I posted, the price is actually a bit high for the paper loss on the backs (nothing higher than a 2-2.5), psa 4 price on everything but the mathewson which is pretty fair, here are the two threads on Net54 and their opinions...

  • Posting this as an update, after careful consideration of the members over at net54 and here I think I am going to try and work out a deal on the Mathewson and Tinker, he is somewhat negotiable and happy to put it in writing that they will pass authenticity.

  • Looks good, but likely trimmed.

  • They look real to me, looked to have been in a scrapbook of some kind. That kind of ruins them grading above a 2 as they look to still have some glue on the backs and slight paperloss. I think his prices are much higher than I would go for nice cards with low grades.
