New to the forum

Hi all: Sorry if this is not the right place to put this post..........I just found this site a couple weeks ago and after reading some these posts decided to join. Just got back into collecting cards again this year. Used to collect in the late 70's early 80's baseball. My how things have changed. Guess the days of 30 cents a pack are over. My biggest regret is selling everything in the mid 90's.

Definitely the right place to post. Welcome to the board!!! This is a great place with lots of knowledgable people.

I started collecting in the late 70's myself. Are you concentrating on that time period now that you are back in?

  • pre 83 topps baseball. But really like the 70's sets. Inherited some sets from my dad when he passed that need upgrading. I remember him saying those 76's are mint for the year.
  • Yes the 70's are what I like the most. I have partials from 69,71,74,76,77.Going to work on them with my limited funds.

I've got all the sets from the 70's except 1971 as those black borders drive me crazy and I have about half of the 1972 set which is a bear based on the pure number of cards in that set.

My personal favorite is 1975 with 1976 coming in a close second as those are the first 2 sets I collected as a kid.

    Edited for grammer.

  • Yeah the 71 are tough. I bought a bunch on ebay about 400. And I got alot of trimmed recolored cards but thats ebay for you. kinda turned me off the 71's. But it is my favorite set of the 70's.

I agree, the 1971 set is tough to collect raw for the reasons you mentioned which is why it will be awhile before I tackle that set.

    Welcome!

<< <i>Just got back into collecting cards again this year >>

    Just curious...

What inspired you to get back into collecting?

    My meager advice:

    1. Establish a Focus.

    2. Establish a Budget.

    3. NEVER forget #1 and 2!

    Don't be a stranger!

My biggest regret is that I didn't lock up my closet at home when I went away to college in 1971, because my mom gave my cousin my entire 1959-1964 complete collection that I opened from wax plus unopened boxes of wax and Dodger Bell Brands.
She said I was too old to hang onto that stuff.

Jim, what did your cousin end up doing with your collection? I would have been pissed. image

All he would tell me is he didn't keep it. pissed doesn't begin to describe my feelings.

He probably sold it for $20. Yes, pissed is probably too mild a word.

  • First thank you all for the kind welcomes. I would not have been very happy either. If this helps my dad had a similar story that when he went to vietnam my grandmother threw his cards away. early 50's he always would say I had atleast 4-5 52 mantle rookies. That was his idol as a kid. And what about all the others Aaron, mays, williams etc......Not trying to down play your story because there both very sad stories indeed.
