are Pokemon back?

In the last few days I watched in amazement as 4 auctions closed on eBay for factory sealed booster boxes of the original (not 1st Edition) 1999 Wizards of the Coast English Pokemon cards. Each box contains 36 packs of cards. My daughter and I had a ball with these back in 1999-2000 and I can remember paying about $75 per box for them. I figured that as kids grew up there might eventually be a renewed interest in them, but I'm stunned at how much these sold for just 12 years later. Has anyone else had any experience with these lately?

this box sold for $325.51

this box sold for $430

this box sold for $325

this box sold for $380
When in doubt, don't.

Four more boxes sold last week for $336, $325, $300 and $297.
    I'm still mystified why.
    When in doubt, don't.

    I hope not lol
  • The original charizard holograph currently seels between $8-40 on ebay and other auction houses but when graded at 10 or 9.5 they exceed $100
quite interesting who knew those cards would be worthwhile someday.

I sold two "PSA 9s" on eBay recently ... one for $50.00 and the other for $47.00 Both buyers hit the BIN. Auction started about $10.00 less.

This is very interesting. Thanks for the information.

  • The 1st edition Base booster boxes consistently sell in the high thousands (avg. $7,000). Pokemon has a surprisingly large market. I would say the largest non-sport market around. There are cards that are awarded at tournaments that also earn in the thousands.
I collect vintage hockey cards as well as pokemon cards. I currently own the largest pokemon card collection in the world.

In the last three months I've watched 16 booster boxes sell on eBay. Average price was $303, and they're going up lately ($335 and $355).
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Yes, there are different variants of the base booster box. The unlimited (most common) ends at the rates you quoted. The shadowless typically ends at $1,000. The 1st edition ends in the high thousands. Prices are definitely rising. The holo rare cards from the base set graded as selling well.

Are these the ones Upper Deck has been counterfeiting?
  • I was not aware that Upper Deck was counterfeit pokemon cards. I know there was a lawsuit over yugioh cards over the summer.

How about the Charizard PSA 10 from the 1999 Basic Unlimited set (not 1st Edition, not Shadowless, not Green Wings) that sold for $425 on eBay a couple of weeks ago? That was crazy.
    When in doubt, don't.
