advice on raw set building

Hi All,

I am more of a high end graded card collector. I just recently branched out on raw sets. Currently 1957, and 1968-75. I am trying to mostly collect NM, but there are definitely EX/MT and NMMT.

Here is my question. I have purchased many lots described as nmmt, and exmt-nm. As always, you know you will get many O/C and also gum stains and other little stains. Again, here is the question, would you rather have a NMMT O/C or a more centered exmt. Also, would you rather have a nmmt O/C or a more centered exmt?

I am sure this will be different person to person, so I would like to hear a lot of people chime in.

Thanks,

Brian

  • great question...
    to me NM.MT OC = a 6 lets say
    NM OC = a 5 lets say
    EX-MT = a six....

most peoples NM-MT is really NM, so if they are REALLY EX-MT, I'd rather have EX-MT centered...

basically 6 is higher than 5....

Ex-mt centered. It looks better and it's easier to sell when the time comes.

as long as the centering is not too bad i prefer corners to centering. in other words, give me a card with 80/20 centering and razor sharp corners over a card that is well centered with softish corners.

corners and edges are number one for me. i do not like soft corners. then 70/30 or better on centering.

Centering is #1 to me. IMO a nicely centered card with a dinged corner or two presents a lot nicer. Good Luck!

I find off centered cards personally offensive.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I behold beauty in a well centered mid grade card. Not so much in an off centered card.

most of my vintage is all low grade and ragged - in other words, well-loved.

Among the things I don't mind, even a little bit: staple/tack holes, paper loss, creases, round corners, missing corners (exhibit A), writing (exhibit B), ink mustaches/spectacles, ink rabbi beards (exhibit C, which would be perfect if it wasn't OC), gum stains, water stains, coffee stains... the list goes on.

The one thing I'm NOT a fan of: poor centering. I've got lots of severely OC cards, but I don't like 'em so much. Barfvader, I ain't.

    As promised, exhibits A, B and C:

I always prefer a true EX/MNT card over a NM or NM/MNT card that has problems.

    Good for you.
  • Well, thanks for all the input and I think I am now leaning towards centering provided it is only a one or two grade level difference. I think if it is three or more grade levels, I will do without the centering.

  • I know the big thing is "high-grade GRADED" on this site...but the satisfaction of collecting cards you can actually touch and feel is very alluring. There is a special power with raw vintage cards. The dings, stains, wrinkles only make them MORE REAL. Try for centered EX-MT....

Always pumped up to hear about someone collecting raw!

I for one, LOVE the raw building, and very much prefer centering over corner wear. Ex/mt centered all the way for me, but to each his own. I am in the midst of 66-69 raw sets and buy lots, picking the best for myself, selling off the rest.

I collect all my sets raw and look for cards that would probably grade out to a PSA 7. I prefer sharp corners, but not if the card is grossly OC where it takes away from the eye appeal.

Same here. I don't like the miscuts, but 70/30 is good for me.
I like cards that look like they just came out of a pack. Sharp corners and edges.

Nice centered cards are the winners for me. After seeing the comments and the pictures of cards, I googled Valmy Thomas to see it he was truly shot...I just read up on Valmy Thomas...quite an entertaining character.
