1861-C $5 PCGS VF30, OGH. The person from whom I bought this coin had listed it on eBay every so often for about 6 months, but did so with washed out pictures that made it difficult to tell what the quality of the coin really was. I finally decided to take a gamble and buy it. It turned out to be a very, very nice coin. The surfaces are pale with deeper honey overtones. IMO, it would grade VF35 or XF40 today. Low mintage of just 6,879, and a historically interesting piece as well. Heritage sold an NGC VF25 CAC in December, 2010 for $6,900, after the exact same coin sold in an NGC VF Details, Cleaned holder in one of their auctions just a couple months before.

I was tempted, and even chatted with Golden eye about the coin(which looks quite nice), but I really need a PCGS Au coin to match the rest of my set that this coin would be a part of. I hate to have bought it, then find an AU 61-c that fit better in the near term, and then have to re-sell this one. Had the same situtation last month on Dahlonega I wanted. Found a nice PCGS XF-45, then it wasnt three weeks later a forum member put up for sale and nicer AU, so i had to get it. I put in a call to two specialist C mint dealers today to help locate one, so hopefully one will turn up eventually.

There is several more $5.00 dates I want to buy for myself. As most of you older members know I sold off all of my personal collection several years ago to give me the capital to open up a B & M, well now that business has been so good from all the gold /silver buying over the past couple years, I wanted to start accumulating scarcer date gold coins this time around instead silver/copper. Need to put all this excess cash somehwere, and I am not sold on long term Bullion only. I think the next year or two will be good, but after that I am not sold on it, as I believe money go will go back into real estate, the stock market, other investments, etc. I also think scarce , better collector investment graded coins will do well longterm.
