Vintage Baseball Submission has Popped!

This submission was mostly 1956-1961 Topps baseball. Received about 80% 8's and 9's (13x9's) so very pleased. All the 1956's and 1959's were puchased at the National in Chicago last month from the same dealer...at 50% Beckett prices, so I got some really nice deals. Just goes to show there is still some nice ungraded material available. The Red Schoendienst is a beauty deserving of the 9 and I thought the Brooks Robinson might even get a 9. The 1961's were from my ungraded collection and I was a little disappointed that there weren't a few more 9's among the star cards, really happy that the Killebrew is a 9. The highlight for me was the two Mantles, both bought on eBay (1965 AL HR Ldrs for $20 and the 1966 Mantle for $125).They both got an 8. Always a risk to buy ungraded Mantles on Ebay but the scans for front and back were large and didn't seem to indicate trimming. Still, I got Lucky!

    Buying at 50% of Beckett is almost unheard of these days in high grade... You did very well!

    Don't really buy a lot off eBay that I submit but I have had more success than not. You just need to be really careful and try and view good scans. Sometimes is it the scan of the back of the card that will raise a red flag about the card's condition. Most of ungraded vintage is over evaluated by the sellers on eBay so I believe you have to take that into account when buying. I always check and see if the seller sells a lot of graded cards. If he does, I ask myself why would he not grade this card if it is so beautiful and he could get a lot more if it were graded in the condition he is advertising. My best buys have been from sellers who don't really deal in sports cards but other stuff, who probably picked the cards up in some deal and want to get rid of them. I have been burned by a few cards that were trimmed. However, my best buys of raw cards on Ebay that I've had graded were:
    1961 Minoso PSA 8.5
    1961 Santo RC PSA 8.5
    1961 Mantle HR PSA 8
    1964 Mays PSA 8
    1966 Yaz PSA 8
    1966 Mantle PSA 8 (this submission)
    1969 Mantle PSA 7

    1973 Yaz PSA 9

    Did buy a lot of 50 1959's once in which there were about 10-12 PSA 8's. Cards only cost about $1 apiece.
