NFL= NCAA

There really is not much of a difference now, the NFL is very similar to the old WAC conference games. QB's throwing for 400 + yards, 150+ yard games from position players..

    <<<NCAA > NFL in many respects. >>>

Really? Other than bigger stadiums and hot co-eds attending games, name one.

The one thing that the NCAA had over the NFL was the traditions and rivalries. With every university now reaching out for the almighty dollar and switching conferences with zero regard for the tradition that makes the sport great, that advantage is being wiped away.

Never mind the rampant cheating, under-the-table payments, and everything else that basically makes college football players mercenaries.

The style of play barely resembles football. It's basically a sandlot game....

The way the NCAA decides it's championship is awful....

It's time the NCAA just recognizes college football for what it is - minor leagues for the NFL. The concept of the football and basketball "student-athlete" is laughable. The universities do not care one single bit about the welfare of the players that take the field every Saturday. I don't know why the players are even forced to attend school while they play football. If the NCAA really cared about athletes recieving a good education, the universities would just honor the player's scholarship and let them attend for free after their "college football career" is done. Or only require players to attend 2nd semester classes while they play football. That way the players could focus on football for 4 years, without worrying about going to classes during the season. Let's face it, the majority of major-conference football players couldn't care less about going to class anyway.

I think a lot more players would take their education more seriously after their "college career" if they didn't make the NFL. You'd see graduation rates much higher than the 65% that is currently the norm, which is an inflated number in itself because teachers just hand athletes passing grades to keep them eligible.

All I meant was the ridiculas stats the NFL players are putting up, if not like the NCAA then certainly like Madden Xbox game stats!

I hear you Perkdog....the rules are set up to let offenses light it up. The NFL realizes that fantasy football is driving the popularity of the sport, and they are doing everything they can to give every advantage to the offense.

Defenses are usually ahead of the offenses early in the season, and there was a truncated training camp which should further limit an offense's effectiveness, and defenses were STILL shredded in Week 1. Not a good sign for defenses this year.

Conference realignment is being done and will continue to be done while upholding traditional rivalries, with some of the Big 12 rivalries being the exception. Traditions like the Georgia/Auburn game which has been played since the late 1800's.....the NFL has nothing that comes close to comparing to this history/tradition. If you are a Packers fan, your family might have stories that stretch back to your Dad liking the team when he grew up in the 50's. My families stories with University of Georgia stretch back to my father's father's father's father.

And here is the HUGE advantage that the NCAA has. When I go to Athens to see Georgia play or if I drive down to Tuscaloosa to see the Tide play....70-80% of the team is from IN-STATE. The fans are really rooting for the hometown team. Locals.... Go look at Georgia's roster and see how many of the players are from in-state. The vast majority are and this is true for most programs in the SEC. The NFL on the other hand is a bunch of players from every corner of the country who have nothing in common with each other except that they were drafted by the same NFL team. If you think those players have allegience to their NFL city....well some do and many don't. They are showing up for the paycheck.

  • College ball is where it's at....but like stated above, the changes are tough to take.

I'm a traditionalist. I do not want a playoff system.
I want the big bowl games all on NY Day again.
I don't want Nebraska or State Penn in the Big 10
I want Florida State and Miami to be Independent still.

But even with all the commercialism and change...it would be a cold day in hell before I watched an XFL (ooops, I mean NFL) game over a college game.

Maybe this season we'll start seeing teams use a spread offense on every play from scrimmage.

Some coincidence that Dave Gavitt passes away the same day two of the Big East's biggest names leave to go to the ACC.
