19th C. type set draft, 9/12/11

This type set will basically follow along the lines of the popular Dansco #7070 US Type album, except I'm omitting the post-1900 coins. As much as I love the early 20th century classics, I'm focusing here on the 19th century, where my primary interest lies. I don't like that the 7070 omits the No Stars Seated Liberty half dimes and dimes, but I am rather grateful that it skips the Draped Bust silver.

I'm a man of modest means and this will be a modest collection. I'll stay within the circulated grades of Fine through About Uncirculated- mostly in the VF-XF range- and I'll leave the Mint State coins for those with deeper pockets. I'm more oriented towards eye appeal than technical grade, and a special emphasis will be placed on coins with the Circulation Cameo ("CircCam") appearance. This refers to coins with darkly toned fields and lighter devices. I invented that term- coined the phrase, you might say- but I'm far from the first person who's liked such pieces. Many folks here have a grasp on what a CircCam is, but if you still find the term baffling, scroll down to look at a few of the silver coins below, and I think you'll get the idea. It's just like a cameo proof, except the cameo effect here is the result of light circulation of an otherwise darkly toned piece, and not from the minting process.

You'll see a lot of "Wanted" signs below, especially in the early days of this set. This does not necessarily mean I've got the money to purchase a certain coin at any given time. The winds of my budget have always blown intermittently! But I hope you'll keep an eye open for me- I'd rather buy from forum friends than eBay strangers.

Note that at least for the silver coins, I ONLY want pieces with a certain matching look- i.e., with good black-and-white "CircCam" contrast.

That's easy enough to find in the Bust coins, and not too hard in the Seated coins, but it might be really tough for some pieces like the 3c silver. I cannot recall ever seeing a CircCam trime, though I'd like to! I'm gonna take this CircCam thing as far as it'll go. That means I'm seeking copper-nickel CircCams, too- like the Shield nickel, which is often seen quite dark, and yes, even the copper-nickel Indian and Flying Eagle cents. It will not be easy at all to find nice CircCam copper-nickel, because that sort of dark toning often goes hand in hand with porosity, and I do not want any problem coins. I think that if I search long and hard enough, I can find some decent nickels and copper-nickel cents with nice contrast and no real problems. It will be difficult, but I know it's possible. The pure copper coins like the half cents and large cents I might not bother trying to find CircCam examples of. I've seen a tiny handful, but it's usually not an appealing look on copper, because dark fields and orangish, bright copper where the toning has rubbed away is yucky. But who knows- maybe there's a copper or two out there with really dark fields and somewhat lighter (but still brown) devices.
