Help on when to purchase rolled coins at bank

CakesCakes Posts: 3,747 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was at my local bank and asked if they had any half dollars and the lady said they had 40 ten dollar rolls. Well I bought 4 rolls and searched with no luck. Should I return and buy the remaining 36 rolls? How do you decide when to search rolls?

Sometimes it's where you buy them much more than when , has been my experience.

Just buy them all. I usually search every single roll unless all of the coins are brand new

I prefer to think of less like "buying rolls" and more like combing the funds you already have in your bank account for hidden treasure. You're going to take back all the money that isn't silver or numismatically valuable and deposit it bank into your account, so why not play w/ your money a little and see if you can turn up some jewels.

you're not paying a premium...so it's just like withdrawing money and searching. if you don't find anything, deposit it back in your account.

I go in and buy up 40-50 rolls and turn up zilch for finds save a few late date bag release only Kennedies. But like Friday I go in and ask if they have any Ikes and the teller says yes and hands me the one they have, "oh by the way we have some halves again, and you might want these" Yeah, right. But then she hands me a '64, a '65 and a '67. The only three they had in the bank at the moment. Go figure.

It's like pulling teeth to get halfs from my bank,
they never seem to have them.

Why wouldn't you buy them all? It's not like you are spending money. If there is nothing in them -so what? You lose nothing. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. I don't get the need for this thread. I will buy all the rolled coins I can for face value- the down-side is 0%. Just return them to another bank or branch. Nothing ventured-nothing gained. Bob

The need is to gather any advice/tips from succesfull roll searchers. The downside is time equals money, and my time is extermely valuable to me.

Only you know what your time is worth then. If you are just looking for silver then it takes just seconds to scan the edges of a whole roll to spot the difference between clad vs silver edges.

Now we are talking. Constantine, when rolled with the paper rolls what do you look for to spot the silver edges? Thanks in advance.

I think I'd rather mow a lawn for 20 bucks and then go buy a clad half.

Agreed, that is why I am looking for any tips/advice before I buy the remaining 36 rolls.
