How does Sportlots work?

So, I was trying here to complete a couple of 80's football sets... when a member informed me about sportlots.com.

I was able to find every card I needed there from a single seller... and purchased/paid for the cards on August 31st.

Besides the email from Paypal that my payment was sent... i've heard absolutely nothing! Not even an emailed invoice from the purchase from sportlots... no further communications from sportlots... nothing from the seller of the cards on sportlots... and well, of course, I have not yet received the cards in the mail from the seller!

Seems odd to have received no communications at all in 9 days (let alone the actual cards)... not even an invoice/order confirmation from the website that took my money!

Is this normal???

Log back in on the Sportlots site and on the left I believe is a menu with pending orders. Just check that.

I've never really had any contact with any sellers and they are encouraged to ship very cheaply. 1st class, even book rate if they are shipping a large order. With the holiday weekend and the PO slowdown (yes, it is happening again) it is not a suprise that you don't have them yet. Especially if the seller was away for the weekend or longer. Give it some more time. I think that the Paypal rules still apply here.

    More info, from Sportlots site:

If an order is in (Filling Order) status for more than 10 days, the order will be removed and your account will be credited for the missing cards plus postage. This seller will also be removed from Sportlots.

I imagine your order is on the way. Just lost in PO purgatory for now. I'm waiting on a couple priority packages right now from ebay sellers and they are taking longer than usual from their sources. The PO is in a slowdown and the # of vacations is up right now too so there are lots of temp carriers down the bare bones minimum.

Thanks... and the problems just keep getting worse!

I'd love to sign it, but apparently I can't! WTF, seriously! I've tried all three of my emails the password(s) I regularly use... they all seem to fail.

From Sportlots website... for forgotten passwords... "Forgot your password?: Just enter your email address in the sign in form and leave the password blank. You will receive an email with your password. Then you can sign in."

Tried that with all three addresses, nothing!

    Also from their website...

You will be notified via email when payment arrives and has been processed. Sellers are notified each night if they have orders to fill. Sellers are expected to fill and ship it out within 5 business days. When the seller fills your order, you will also be notified via email from that seller to let you know that the their portion of your order has been filled. Sellers are expected to actually ship your cards that day or the next business day. Under normal circumstances, you should receive your cards within a week of getting notification that your order has been filled.

Well, I paid with Paypal... should I not have at least received the "email when payment arrives and has been processed"?

Uggh, this is frustrating. I mean, we're only talking about $7-8, but this is some crappy service if you ask me.
  • I hope you do well. I tried it twice and the cards were very off center.
  • Have no fear. The Nrmint cards you ordered will arrive. But they will be creased and have 80/20 centering at best.

Seriously, I find Sportslots a total waste of time and have had no luck with the dealers there.

I've had good luck filling sets etc. with them, BUT all my stuff has been very new stuff, 2007 and up. A handful here and there to finish sets without paying huge shipping fees that the ebay guys want.

The log in problem, I don't know? I went 2+ years between orders and had no problem with getting my password from them.

spot on my experiences also. Encouraged to be cheap on shipping is quite an understatement, be prepared for a Tom Pagnozzi card on either side of your order in an envelope to be more than adequate protection for most of the sellers there that I purchased from. I'm sure some of our esteemed members here that also sell there would never do such a thing though.
  • hockeycrazy:why do you keep bying, don't you ask for a pic.go to ask seller a question, like does card have creases, how far off-center is it,did my order ship yet.do dilligence is a must,i've had great luck.always ask for a pic

Hmmm, I've had very good luck with Sportlots, although I've only ordered about 10 times.

Although, one time I ordered two commons and the seller complained. He sent the cards and attached a note that said "I had to dig through a bunch of cards to find these, all for 36 cents plus 85 cents postage. Not worth my time." image

I've placed around 212 orders on Sportlots since 2006, and have been happy a vast majority of the time.

Sounds like something's going on with your account. Whenever I order I get an email that I've ordered, then about 100 emails after that telling me the status of each card. It's actually annoying how many emails you get when you order. Then the cards usually trickle in 3-7 days after you order.

You should sign up again and click the Help button on the right. They usually get back to you within a day and you will receive your message in the Message Center.

if you can get into your acct, there should be messages from each seller you purchased from that "your order has been filled" and it's been shipped....not that it means much because I've never had an order come with come with tracking, and their quote is a generic "4-12 days" anyway. Personally I wouldn't buy cards older than the 80's, (bad experiences buying 70's commons and semi-stars) but for newer stuff I haven't had many negative transactions other than packing materials some of these guys have used. I've had cards sent in index manilla envelopes wrapped in cutout 12 pack Pepsi cartons, I've had one of their larger dealers (bkcardsx) drop 6 team set bags of singles into a cramped bubble mailer with no other protection (despite always choosing the "premium shipping"), and I"ve had dudes build mini fortresses with thick cardboard in bubble mailers. Just depends on the seller.

Edit to add: you might mind find some emails in your spam/bulk folder. Like CDs, I used to get tons of follow up emails as well, but either my spam blocker is absorbing them, or they're now just sending those messages to my message inbox.

I've had 155 orders on Sportlots, and the only issue I have occassionally is that someone sends me the wrong card. Other than that, I find it to be an invaluable hobby resource; where else are we going to pick up obscure singles to finish sets that A) aren't worth the money to list on eBay and B) no one on a hobbyist message board would take the time to advertise and organize them?

Came home from work yesterday... and sure enough... cards were in my mailbox! Very good quality for the price too, happy to have completed those two sets!

Just got online today, and see that Sportlots Support emailed me this morning with the problem... I typo'ed my email address when I registered image

Guess that explains the lack of communication/emails pertaining to my order!

    -1 for me today

sounds like they have improved since I last purchased something there. What sets did you complete if you don't mind sharing, and congrats on finishing the sets.

  • no complaints whatsoever buying and selling on sportlots. I'm very selective when it comes to filling my '60 set. More often then not the cards are accurately graded or better. Auctions over there can turn out some incredible deals as well. As for the shipping, if you purchase 'budget' shipping, that's what you'll get...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

  • Why I do like checkoutmycards.com better as they provide clear front and back photos, they are just as good as becket marketplace and can be very helpful in finding oddball cards for player PCs. A couple dealers even specialize in odd balls on there.

I also agree with Lee their many e-mails you get from an order is annoying.
