Any thoughts on the next set to build?

Well, I'm nearing completion on a 61 Topps baseball set I'm building (mostly raw) and am at the point where I'd like to start another one.

I'm thinking of 57, 59, 60, or 63. I will build almost all of it raw.

The 61 set is the first I've built and I've discovered how the hi number cards can quickly overwhelm a budget. The positive is that NM raw commons can be had for a buck or 2. I completely focus on centering so I've avoided buying lots since most of the cards have centering issues.

I'm leaning towards the 59 set mainly because I already have the following cards in PSA 7 or 8 and that would drastically reduce the cost of building the set, but each of the sets have their own beauty and style:

1959 40  Warren Spahn (HOF)
1959 50  Willie Mays (HOF)
1959 150  Stan Musial (HOF)
1959 180  Yogi Berra (HOF)
1959 202  Roger Maris
1959 212  Fence Busters (Aaron/Mathews)
1959 262  Hitters Foes (Drysdale, etc.)
1959 270  Gil Hodges
1959 350  Ernie Banks (HOF)
1959 360  Al Kaline (HOF)
1959 380  Hank Aaron (HOF)
1959 387  Don Drysdale (HOF)
1959 390  Orlando Cepeda (HOF)
1959 415  Bill Mazeroski (HOF)
1959 430  Whitey Ford (HOF)
1959 435  Frank Robinson (HOF)
1959 439  Brooks Robinson (HOF)
1959 450 Eddie Mathews
1959 461  Mantle hits 42nd Homer
1959 462 Colavito's Catch
1959 463  Kaline Becomes Batting Champ
1959 464 Myas Catch
1959 465 Sievers Sets Homer Mark
1959 466 Pierce All Star Starter
1959 467  Aaron Clubs Homer
1959 468  Snider''s Play
1959 469  Hustler Banks
1959 470 Musial Raps 3000th
1959 478  Roberto Clemente (HOF)
1959 495  Johnny Podres
1959 505 Tony Kubek
1959 515  Harmon Killebrew (HOF)

I know many of you have built sets and I'd love your thoughts on the four years I mentioned above. Do they all have hi number scarcity? Any particular cards that are tough? Any other issues I should consider?

Thanks!

Mark

  • I am currently building a EXMT/NM raw 1957 set as well as a VG/EX to EXMT raw 1957 set. I know what you are talking about the off centered lots. That is why I am building the second set. I just love that set. Although you have a nice start to the 1959 set so you should probably go that route.

    Good luck,

I already sent you a pm on the 1960 set.
I would add that I feel it is an affordable set to build and the horizontal card layout is very cool.

Considering all the graded '59 stars you already have I don't think you should even have to ask the question ... go for the complete '59 set. Best of luck and enjoy it!

  • From your 4 choices I would pick 1960. It is a beautiful set. My second choice would be 1963.

I love that 59 set.Mine is currently ranked #15.This is one set that someone in the family will inherit some day.Hopefully not too soon.I have been obsessed with this set since I was a kid back in the hood in Detroit.

    Toughies
    IMO #2 #8#11#15#26,#33#36,39,42,49,52,56,61,77,82,88,93,103.104,105,112,123,128,137.148,155,174,176,192 ,196,229,249,263,295,302,303,316 no option,321 no option,322 no trade347,416 variations,474,481,489506,507,508,511,517,526,546.
These are basically the ones I found hard to find.#40 Spahn has 3 variation the born in 1931 is the toughest. If you are just building the basic set 316,3221,322.and #40 and 416 can be disregarded.

Good Luck. You will enjoy putting this set together..

I would go with the '59 because you have a good start on it.

  • That's a heckuva start you have on the '59 set, so if I were in your shoes that's which one I'd do first. After that, '60 or '63. I like the design of the '60 set but it's plagued with print smears/lines, etc.
