Wow, talk about metal flow. There's a tough, tough, tough piece to grade. (At least for me.)

I would think an upper-end VF at least. But probably better than that. It's nearly impossible for me to distinguish the primitive, softly-struck parts from the parts that might actually have wear. Dunno if the hairlines would keep it outta TPG plastic or not. I rather doubt it, considering the overall crudeness of the piece and the quality (or lack thereof) of the flan.

Are these scarce? I have no idea. I'm only semi-familiar with the stuff from the late 1880s on.

Edit to add: I actually was able to get a better look by zooming out a bit. With the large pictures, I felt like I was looking at the surface of a meteorite or something. (No, seriously, though, the pictures are fine, but a bit difficult to grade from without stepping back a bit.)

    Very challenging.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

About VF for wear / Cleaned / Scratched - Net Genuine Slab.

    Nice imaging, btw.

It is an AU/Unc with some slighthairlining. These are not rare, but this one has not circulated much if at all.

Looks like it is struck over something.

That sure looks like a head on the right side of the Obv doesn't it??

I mostly agree with ormandh, except I believe it is AU. There is some obvious, though very slight, wear. And the slight hair-lining is exaggerated by the high magnification. Others may be mistaking crudeness of the strike with wear.

Edited to say that what I saw as wear may instead be cabinet friction.

If it were an ancient, I'd grade it EF with weak strike. I guess AU then?
