1991 Upper Deck Football Variations

1991 Upper Deck Football was printed from 1990 to 1992. I think I read somewhere there are at least 5 different hologram variations on the back of them. I like buying lots of Steve Young cards and looking for various variations and the like. So far, I have found three different holos. for 1991 Upper Deck. This of course means there are at least three different holos for all the cards, including the Favre RC (or RCs if you count the multi rc card).

Has 1990 hologram.

Has 1991 hologram, the "91" is always hard to see if present. This is the most common.

Has 1992 hologram.

If anyone has any other holo variations, feel free to share them.

Upper Deck literally seems to have printed to order many things. In some cases, I know for fact they did.

  • Is that a "completely different style" difference on the holograms, or perhaps each sheet is printed and then cut and each card just gets a different part of the sheet?

Mark, they did the same thing with 1991 baseball. I don't have one with the 1990 hologram yet.

The top one has "90" in it...and is the same hologram on 1990 UD Baseball.

The middle one has "91" in it...and is a completely different style of lettering....and is the same hologram on most 1991 UD Baseball.

The Diamond hologram....completely different from the other two....is most common on 1992 UD Baseball....and note the 92 in the bottom of the diamond.

They are clearly different sheets and you can make out the different dates in the photos I provided. Some of the other reported variations might be from different parts of the three sheets shown above.

    And a late discovery, a 5th type!

(5th type has not been confirmed for football yet)

The distribution on these is bizarre. Typically you will not pull them from wax (nowadays at least) but if you do, they are all in sequence, 301-399 may all have the odd hologram type. Factory sets have been my best source, usually you'll find a solid 100ct run, typically with the 1990 hologram type, which means that they do not track the production dates as previously speculated.

However, with the 1990-91 UD French hockey, it is my belief that the 1990-91 hologram type was the initial, short-printed run of the product. Once case sales exploded, they cranked out much more, deflating the product's value almost overnight, they used the 1991 hologram type (or "correct" type for all low series 1991 products).

In 1991 football, the 1992 hologram types are very common, as any high series box will be full of them. It's much rarer to find a high # card with a 1991 type hologram on back. I can only think of a handful of examples. 1990-91 NHL holograms have only been found on low series cards from what I can tell. And last, the low series rookies were usually removed from high series printings in lieu of the Rookie Force subset, making "Star Rookie" cards with 1992 holograms slightly scarcer among hologram variations in the set. They are no too rare, just harder to come by than their 1991 hologrammed counterparts.

For baseball, I've never actually pulled a 90-91 (NHL) type out of a pack. I've only found them in lots on a random basis.

At first I wasn't sure they made '90 type for the high numbers, but I own a Bagwell, so I imagine the Butler has one as well. I've never seen a 90-91 (NHL) type for any high number subject either. And the comic ball type has only been found on low number cards as of yet.

  • Wow...I guess my 1990 is the 1990-91 NHL type or a Comicball...you can see the "90" in the upper part of the photo provided above. So now I need one with baseballs and the other "90 version.

I think I might have some graded comicball somewhere...just not sure which series.

You have the 90-91 or "NHL type" hologram. I have never seen a 1990 MLB type hologram on a 1991 UD football card. But they could definitely be out there.

The Comicball type is the type I have seen the least examples of, Nolan Ryan three times, commons for the other few if I remember correctly (I don't own them anymore).

Man ... between '89 and '91 it seems like UD printed "money" whenever they wanted.

I know this has been discussed before, but how hard would it be for Topps to print some '52 mantles on "old stock"? Too scarey just thinking about it!!!

  • Thanks for the clarification. Will have to dig through the extra tonight and try to find that 90 Baseball....

I have a few other Steve Young variations (different cards) and will post on them sometime for you (and in another forum for an Emmitt collector...same era player basically).

Just make sure to do it for the fun of the hunt. They generally do not sell well (couldn't get $9.99 for a Favre Star Rookie variation pair a few years ago), mostly due to lack of knowledge and exposure.
