Opinions on Honus Wagner Autograph

For several years Honus Wagner was the Commissioner of the National Semi-Pro baseball Congress. My grandfather received this certificate back in '37 for making it onto the S. Dakota All-State team.

I've had this for several years and thought I'd see what you think. Personally, I think it's too straight and perfect to be done by hand, but it is done in blue ink compared to the black used for the

certificate. Threw in a picture of gramps during the war playing in France, 1945. He's the catcher and one hell of player if I do say so myself. Thanks guys. Doug

I can't help you on the autograph, but wow that is a great story and family heirloom.

    Thanks for sharing. image

Doug ... I echo mikes remarks. THOSE two items need to be framed together and hung up on your wall. NOW we know from where you got your screen name! HAHAHA
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • Here are similar "full" honus signatures that I found. I have no opinion on the matter.
For quicker comparison, I'd say the final PSADNA is the closest.

  • I don't know Honus Wagners Signature very well. Sorry, I can't help much.

That is a nice piece. I'd recommend sending it to PSA/DNA.

    Good Luck,

Most def Honus' signature... But, I'm not sure it's actually signed... i.e., for some reason, I thought these were printed (as opposed to hand signed). Really cool piece regardless.

Now that I reread your post, I think that's what you're asking... signature wise, that's Honus - but your point (about it being to straight) is my concern. I seem to recall seeing something similar once, and it had a printed signature and not a hand signed one. If you have a loupe, you can probably tell... if there is slight feathering, then it's a real signature (and save your PSA money, that one is good). However, if it uniform and appears printed, then alas, you have a printed signature (and again, save your PSA money).

Looks printed in the picture...You can scan in really high resolution 2400dpi or higher, then crop the sig and blow it up as big as you can. If you can see some ink pooling at the end of the capital letters and the period then you night have something. If it looks uniform, it's printed.

Thanks guys. I seem to be leaning towards a printed sig but I may bring it up to Mill Creek Sports near me when they have PSA people at their store next time. One more photo of Grandpa Walt, this is the Wagner South Dakota team in 1939. He's third in from the left, front row. Thanks again. Doug Pigsley
