Questions - 1955 Bowmans: sizing and miscuts - SCANS ADDED

I have a large number of 1955 Bowmans, and some are shorter but not trimmed. I take it that these aren't worth as much and that PSA won't grade them. Am I correct? Don't guess they should be sold without noting the short cut, is that also correct?

Also, is a miscut on the back fairly common for 1955 Bowmans?

Thanks

My 54 and 55 Bowman football and baseball all have sizing issues. I don't suspect trimming on the majority of the miscuts. I have some PSA graded cards from those years and some of them were graded between 5's and 7's with no quals, and measuring them against the ungraded cards show that some of the graded cards are miscut as well. I assume PSA takes this into account, as Bowmans from those two years have all sorts of cutting issues.

Answer: There is no Clear answer, I have subbd Hundreds and hundreds of 55 Bowman, and have Never had more than one or two in a sub of 50-200 Kicked out for Min. Size, so I think your asking for a problem that doesn't exist....If there trimmed...then of couse that's a different matter. Noting the Short Cut in a listing, well again if not trimmed then why don't you just throw them in the trash, or you can send them to my address, I'll be happy to take them off your hands.

Answer: Very, Very, Very Common, and I think for the most part it doesn't terribly downgarde until you get to almost two different cards being visible, I don't think you'll ever see higher than about a EX-MT 6 with more than 90% miscut on back.

It is not surprising to sometimes see PSA 8s with miscut backs. After handling hundreds [if not thousands?] of these in high grade for a period of 5-6 years, I'd say it is quite common for PSA to sometimes not look much at the back when grading. Other times, I've seen those with perfectly centered front get qualified for the miscut backs. It depends on the grader, and how attentive they are.

Very very common, though, especially because the backs have much shorter borders than the fronts, which have relatively huge borders.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

They are all over the map with this issue. Don't crack high grade 55 Bowmans. Trimmed, miscut, min size..it's all there.

Here are two Fellers I recently subbed. Both came back with miscut, one a 7 and one a 6. Can you tell me where the miscut is on the 7 MC?

  • Uh... where are the scans? I love 55 Bowman baseball cards. The color TVs as my brother used to call them.

  • David,

I believe the Fellers get the miscut from the bottom part of the card. There should be wood grain under the "Color TV" part of the card.

If you look at both backs of the cards the background color on the right side is showing at the top of the card from the next card. You can just see a little bit of it at the back top right of both cards. This is similar to a lot of 77 Topps Baseball that has the very top of the grass blades showing from the next card and getting the MC designation.
